Vehicle Under Coating Advice

Mornin Fellas,

I live in the northeast rust belt. I just picked up a very nice 99' Dodge 3/4 ton with a cummins and I want to make it last as long as possible. The frame isn't scaling but has surface rust that is in need of sealing up. I've been looking around on the net trying to find an effective rust treatment and top coat but the wide array of products is enough to make ones head spin. So I figured I'd reach out for some experience on the subject. I know nothing will stop rust as many things promise but something is better than nothing when it comes to slowing down the decay of the vehicle from the road salt up here.

I use the yelowish colur under coat from napa and had good luck with it. Used it on my 01 jimmy. Only rust on the body wad a spot on rear bumper about the size of a quarter.

Is that the type of stuff that turns the rust black?

Now in my eyes that is a thing of joy to behold ...Only thing i would say is ..Wax Oil in every place you can get it when the truck is dry and then wash underneath when you can when there is salt used on the roads. I feel it will be difficult to put a paint of some sort on the underside that will really get everywhere and its the bits that "Don't" air dry but remain wet due to mud and so on that will rust the worst. Its worth slobbering on the wax oil every 2 yrs or so if you can. Its a commonly used method over hear.

You know my pain bud. I would like to find something that can be sprayed into those tight spots that a brush can't get to. I don't care if it drips out for 2 weeks, that just means it's getting everywhere. I've never heard of wax oil...can you provide feedback on any certain brands that worked well for you?

This is the UK ...so i do know exactly what you can be up against with the wet and road salt . Basically that is how you use "Waxoyl" ...you spray it into/onto every bit you can and let the residue drip out .

I have used this stuff, and it works really well. Harder than woodpecker lips when hard, but pricey!

Thanks...I think I'll go this route or do annual coatings of Fluid Film. Lots of guys using that with good results also, even with existing rust like mine...I miss living in the south.

Thanks man...I'm a GM guy but couldn't resist this recently painted second gen with the Cummins for under $10k, built like a tank. It's had some work done to it...wow! Talk about power! It's also a 5 speed, so no worries about that garbage auto they ran back then.

No it just goes on thick and stays a nice yellow colur. It just sucks when ya gotta craw under for fixing stuff, gets all over ya.

My under coat gun also has couple different hoses that attatch to it for spraying into the frame and other tight spots. Also spay inside the doors as well.

I do the same with my vehicles every spring. They also get frequent under body car washes during the winter which helps more than a lot of people realize.

Glad to help Sir ...That truck is worth spending a $ or 2 on by the look of it. Really do like your trucks in the US...

I hope you didn't end up with the dreaded K block.
My 99 has a 16" crack in the water jacket on the passenger side of the block.

Thankfully it's not the 53 block that everyone says is a nightmare. I bought the truck from a friend at work and he showed me a bunch of stuff to look for such as block castings. I'm learning a lot about this rattler but I've got a long way to go.

I've got an undercoating plan that I started on yesterday. After a pressure washing session and scraping loose debris I started painting over rust with a rust reformer paint. Once I complete the painting I'm going to purchase the fluid film gun and wands to treat everything with fluid film. I looked into WaxOyl but it doesn't seem to be available in the states. In all my looking around I think I prefer a treatment that doesn't hide everything that way I can keep a close eye on areas that need more attention or ones that will need a touch up.

But now it's raining so I'll be a bit delayed in getting this done...dang it
