Shipped a 394 to my father in law. Emptied the gas and oil.

Got a call tonight from the UPS distributor. They opened the box because it smelled like gas, therefore they couldn't ship it. Had to go TO the distributor to pick up. They would not ship even ship it back to my local UPS store. showed the guy at the distributor there was no gas in the tank... doesn't matter, smells like gas ...fumes means he can't put it on a truck....ie, can't even use the same box because it'll smell like gas and thats no good. aegaoserigao;wifa;fha;owerufhao;weufh;oaweuifha;ojh

hopefully I can get my $70 back ....

Once I had the USPS return a box to me that smelled of 'fuel' ..... it was that magic marker ink.

.... put clear tape over the marker areas and off it went.

I had a saw stuck in the USPS carousel for almost 3 weeks one time. It was on its way from Maine to me in CT. It got stuck in GA for almost 3 weeks on its way here. The guy who sent it left gas and oil in it. USPS classified it as hazardous material and sent it to the mail recovery center, also known as "you'll never see it again". All of a sudden it showed up on my door. With gas and oil still in it. Go figure.

Triple, I ship with United Parcel Smashers a lot, their company Haz-Mat policy is any item that ever contained fuel or oil must be inside of three layers of plastic to ship.

I have received saws in boxes that were practically dripping with oil as it leaked all over the place during transit and they didn't say squat. I guess oil is okay, lol...

according to this guy, fumes is a no no.... that was the issue.

i asked if there was anything I can do tonight to ship it, and he said no... ie, even if I stuffed the gas compartment with paper towels and made sure there wasn't a drop of fuel in there, too bad.... ugh....

Throw a dryer sheet or two in before ya tape it up. Those suckers smell it up pretty good.

Can't really blame UPS. Gas vapors are flammable and explosive.

I'll use falcons or pigeons before I use ups.
Never have had a good experience with them.
I really like when someone sends a saw ups that I have to sign for so instead of working that day I wait because they won't tell you what time just between 8 and 5 and if you missed it you have one more shot then it goes back.

I've had 2 that I had to go get because they smelled like gas.

Just thinking out loud....

How long do you have to leave the fuel tank open to "air out" before the gas stink evaporates ? A day ? Two maybe ?

I usually run some "old stale waste fuel/gas" through the oil tank to get some of the sawdust schmutz out. Then wash the saw before shipping. Got to assume the sawdust is soaking in oil or exhaust fume.

Could the fuel filter be the issue ? Maybe taking that out/off and sealing that and the carb off might help the "fume stink"

I let the box itself air out overnight, used paper towels to wick any residual gas in the tank, closed the tank with a paper towel in it... triple bagged the powerhead. we shall see if this helps. the box doesn't smell like gas anymore. gonna take it down there and see if they'll use the same label lol... hope I didn't waste $70

Pizza boxes is my secret. I send them fueled and oiled up so the owner can pull it out and start them right away.

Was the fuel cap installed? I have never had an issue with a fuel smell but most i have shipped have a fuel cap on them or let the tank air out a long time. I usually have a junk cap or two around that arent worth selling i will use for such things.

UPS stores are a rip. In my experience FedEx is half that and USPS is even less..
