Thats a noice one! This ones not quite that nice but a pretty darn nice one owner saw.
I had to add a new side clutch/sprocket cover (original missing) and I added new plastic and rebuilt the chain brake. Engine was shot so I rebuilt the top end. I figure I dropped about $150 for a saw that will now last ten more years or so. It almost runs even with my MS 361.

I may have missed it but what was the compression readings on this cyl ?
Wondering if the rings are worn ( spit back issue?)
Never checked compression, just pulled muffler and it looks pretty darn clean.

Not a bad looking saw WoodDoctor, but it just does not have the barn find appeal of my 034 (which is also being converted to a ported 036).

The bar looks almost new, but took me about 15 minutes today just to pry the chain off of it. The cylinder actually looks good if anyone needs one.

That's Fugly Mickey.

Which loser is gonna port that ugly beast?

Take more "before" pics before the transformation occurs.

Cus,

Think you have to go back to square one here. Take it apart, as in pull tank off, and vac test everything.

Make sure that no parts have any vac leak individually and put together.

It's possible you've got a wonky AM carb, it happens.

3 turns out on each screw sounds like an air leak.

I'd 100% check the flywheel key also. I had a 262 drive me nuts, wouldn't start without 47 pulls and ran crappy with spitback. Was a sheared key.

A quick cheat is to pull the plug and starter cover. Turn until the piston appears to be at TDC, then see if the flywheel magnets are in line with the coil legs.

Morning sir,
Ill double check the flywheel location, but i did as you suggested already by checking the approximate location with the starter off and and its right there. If its off it could only be a couple degrees. Carb is new zama c3a which was oe for this particular saw and all seems well. Once i get it running it idles, revs and cuts perfectly, its just been hard starting. Im gonna try it again this morning, its in the 40's here so it should be a good cold start test.

The only way i can think tonexplain the spitback is that while i messing with h screw and pulling a million times i managed to flood it badly and what i saw spitting back out the carb was just from the crankcase? I had the air filter off to make sure the choke flap was staying shut, so i could see fuel coming back out the carb after it managed to start the one time that it did

Just got to work and brought saw with me and it started again on 5 pulls on choke, 2 off choke and ran nicely. Still some work to do on the l screw so it starts a little easier but its darn close finally. Guess im just a tard and cant tune a carb

I still think there must be something different in the shape of the carb jets that would cause it to require a couple more turns out. Stupid chainsaws anyway...

Sounds like you got it figured out some more.

I'd still like to see the skirts(I always like the skirts) and check the ring gap...
the early 026-034-036 saws are so easy to break down and rebuild....and eliminate all gremlins at one fell swoop.

Yours Jeremy.

If you want me to send it, PM your address, or I'll give it to you next time we cross paths. It is in good shape, and I was hoping it would not go to waste.
Awesome! Thank you Mike.
Probably won't see ya til next GTG @ Steves place.
