For reals I'd say weight savings, cheaper to produce, more compact design, and less potential failure points as well as what Kevin said.

Absolutely for palm trees. Only good use use for larger plastic clam shells like MS390 or MS391. 70cc would be better.

Dropping weight on a 50cc platform. Example is the 346 top end on a 350 chassis. Not really much advantage here, but it is a pleasure to run.

Suppose you have a Stihl 290 that you hate. The mechanic who installed the last ignition module (now dead) stripped the threads. Now you can't even remove it to replace it. You now have a good excuse to throw the saw into the boneyard for parts.

When it takes a fall and or smacked by a tree and has everything broken except the crankcase. The honeycomb design makes them extremely tough.
When repairs are necessary, there's no case to split, bearing/seal replacement is a snap compared to a mag case saw.
