Line clearance.
Insulated low voltage lines this week. We call them "bundle" because theyre usually a few lines plaited together.

At this point we have reached our 2 meter clearance zone.

Ten more minutes got it to this stage.

All finished.

Im usually a clearance not appearance kind of guy but I made an exception here. It would have looked awful if we just cut it to clearance and left half of it standing.

In this country that first pic would have been the last, lol
The very same here, I just would not have been able to sleep after doing that.
2 of the guys on the crew worked for the father of the man who owns that hedge so they wanted to do a good job on it too.

I had already climbed this roadside scotts pine trees around this time last year.

That time the customer wanted low hanging branches removed for road safety.

Recently she decided to remove the tree altogether.

I had cut the ivy around the base of the tree last year before I knew she wanted the tree removed.

This made climbing the tree a second time pure misery, and dangerous.

The only thing worse than ivy is dead ivy. Your climbing spikes tear it away when you try to spike in, you won't get a rope up and back down through it because of how rough and rigid it is and if you try and grab a hold of it its much more likely to break off under your weight.

My felling cuts were pretty good, no room for error beside a busy road, low voltage power lines and a fibre optic cable.

A disgusting mess of dirty, dusty, dead ivy. More ivybthan timber.

Got it well cleaned up. The timber itself was very dirty, lots of knots, resin pockets and bits of rot. Not a healthy tree.

Some roadside ash trees.
A big drop below them.
We used the chipper to pull. It has a winch.
As you can see I didn't bother putting a face cut in that little spruce.

The biggest one.

When it fell the butt sprang up in the air and the whole thing rolled a fair ways down the bank.

Trusty ms461. I love this saw.

So far its definitely got more grunt than my ms500i.
Both have max flow filters and egan exhausts.
But I've only ran a couple of tanks through the 500 so far.
It will probably wake up a bit after a few more.

Check out this big dead ash growing out of the bank of this stream. Pretty cool.

20260223_092124.jpg

Another unhealthy looking sycamore.
We felled it directly away from the camera.

20260223_133714.jpg

It was quite back weighted.
We had to double and triple stack wedges to get it to fall.
I had cut my hinge down to nothing, not recommended on a sycamore.

Another dead-ish sycamore.

On its way.

All the sycamores on this site were in bad condition. It was a bit of a swamp there and sycamore is usually found growing on dry rocky ground so maybe that's why.

Yeah Sycamores here don't do as well in overly wet conditions - they usually end up with some heart rot.
