One of the big rules is don't run out of gas on your back-cut. If you're getting low, fill up before progressing.

I know who did it. They didn’t run out gas, they cut what they thought was enough, tree didn’t tip so they walked away.

Tear-cuts are important, especially when you're tied in.

Knocked out a sidejob today for a regular client. Madrone fairy-ring split out during our last big-major wind storms a couple months back. This one got postponed because it wasn't in the road. Each stem was ~24-30" dia.

The lower fork was no problem. Better footing, 372 with a 28". Between this stem being partially uprooted and showing some signs of rot, coupled with how the second fork was hung up in the neighboring madrone, it was tough to choose between a face cut or cutting the fork.

After deciding that the westerly face-cut wouldn't keep it from hanging up more, I put a shallow nip in the fork and proceeded with a conservative back-cut.

We tried to pull it with the truck, but the stem wouldn't budge. Took some winching and polesawing (Silky, for the win!) of the backcut to slide it out of the crotch it was hung in. Then we repositioned the line and pulled it to the East, uphill. Came crashing down, but all was well.


I did take a lot of the stump from the last photos, just didn't snap anymore showing the cleanup. My helper was trading his time for the wood, as he's close friends with the landowner. He's 71 and still doing pretty good. I do most of his tree work, as well.

In retrospect, I wish I had loaded up the grip-hoist and rigging today. The winch and truck just barely cut it.


This one is on the docket for next time. Lots of other storm damage to cleanup there, so it will make for a full day.

Felled this heavy leaning Norway spruce. It was leaning hard for the road. Sizwell worked wonderfully, landowner was amazed I managed to turn the tree around.




Now he wants the rest gone





On a side note, here's a co-worker using my van as a mewp on a line clearance job. Good thing the bosses were elsewhere!

I really *f-wording hate leylandiis. We winched these trees, then my winch rope got stuck underneath the felled tree and I had to nearly cut the whole *f-wording thing up to get it out
It was only meant to be a drop the trees and go job

My dad had one of those when I was a kid. Landowner wanted to use that for brush but he said one tire wouldn't hold air. Looked like he pulled the wheel off but never got it back on while I was there. I see em randomly for sale, 350ish.

Here’s one I did yesterday,
It’s a rotten/hollow oak pole.
Just a but taller than a telephone pole with wires on one side, and a hay barn on the same side. And a horse stable on the other side with a 2000lt water tank and a gate into the field ( which the teli-handler is in front of
The many IBC containers (1000 Lt) were moved as this was the best and only way it could be pushed over

My 660 started to mess me around and kept stopping during the felling.

It turned out the spark plug had come lose etc, which I sort of figured out at the time but had to crack on with the tree and just picked up the 461 with a 25” bar

I took down this standing dead Ash last Thursday. I made the bottom of the Face Cut with my Echo CS-501P chainsaw and then finished the FC/notch with both my Council Tool Jersey and Boys Axe. I then felled the tree by using the Echo again on the back cut.

It was leaning pretty good, note the difference to the fence post.

Chips. It took me about 8-10 minutes of actual work to make and finish the notch cut. Work+Rest = about 40-45 minutes. Work a minute, rest for five minutes +/-.

What leaves it had:






I'll be giving this one away; I don't need any more firewood; although I may keep ~40" of the trunk to see if I can make tool handles out of it.

Dropped a little digger over at my brother's place mid-week and bucked up a few diggers that were dropped awhile ago with his 201t since that was the only fueled saw. Little bastard impressed me, with a 14 or 16" bar buried in semi-seasoned digger it got warm but didn't stall or seem overloaded at all. The best part was mechanical aid made cleanup so dang easy!

Right before I left to meet a guy who bought some parts from me a neighbor showed up and asked if I could drop some trees soon. Once I wrapped up selling the parts I grabbed the 562 and headed over to see what was up. Turns out a few trees encroaching on his internet antenna's line of sight to the tower finally blocked the signal. Since his job is online he hadn't been able to work since Thursday, today the cable guy told him the tower was on another hilltop, blocked by the trees. ~3hrs of cutting, spotting, and more cutting later line of sight was restored, his internet is mostly back online and it's the cable guy's issue now. The notch in the upper hill in the last pic is the tower's location, only the right half of the notch was open when I started
