Going in for saw logs?

Going to mill the 13’ base with my granberg setup, possibly take another 10’ after. The top blew out years ago so sadly beyond the first 40’ it’s nothing special. I’ve got a pile of 30”+ fir to mill but fir eats my chains up so I’m procrastinating those haha.

Me and Edna scrounged this Pin Oak close to Selma this evening. Was sizing up some downed logs on a country road right a way and a old cogger appeared out of nowhere!
We struck up a conversation about wood, 2020, gang activity, how we were raised, and he offered us all this and another couple loads on his property. Old school duffer and I guess I spoke his language.
I'll get the wife to fix him a sweet potato pie and some chicken next time we return!
Decent haul....great way to start 2021!
Happy New Year studs!!!:sun_smiley:

Probably biggest tree to date. 113 year old fir and 47” on the stump. Still about 36” 13ft up and didn’t have much taper after that. @Redbull661 @Deets066 you recognize anything in a picture?View attachment 275253View attachment 275254 View attachment 275255View attachment 275256

Nice cutting! If you want to avoid pulling bark around the stump try making small, shallow cuts a few inches below each end of your hinge wood. This will make any peeling bark break off once it reaches the cuts, stopping this peeling bark pulling your tree one way or another.
This bark pulling situation happens a lot here with how soft our wood is, particularly the bark.

Saw the neighbors spying me again... There's still snow on the ground, I've got 500 feet of hose, 300 gallons of water, and a 60 foot fire break around the pile. My pile has more defensible space than your entire property nosey neighbor.

Do they skid them whole or do you cut the paperwood off the tree and drag it down to the butt and re grab the whole bunch as one?
No skidder on this job (it would be a waste of time), cut to length out in woods and forward it out with rottne. Mostly 22ft firewood length and low grade logs. I’m bucking to length, cutting whatever few oversize and hard to reach stuffs he can’t with the doosan.

It's funny how the markets differ around the country. Everything around me is cut to 8 or 9 ft lengths.
Well with the exception of one mill but they do all their own logging so nobody's cutting for them.
