Jeff, even when I was 100 lbs lighter than you I wouldn't do it!

My first FIL, who taught me how to use a chainsaw and fell trees, was a climber for Asplundh (before they had buckets). I believe they ran Homelite XLs!

I've seen him and others climb dead trees like they were monkeys, and I just stand there and shake my head and say "Not Me"!

I'm scared of heights, even though no one else in the family is!

More power to you guys, and I'm glad it turned out well. Stay safe!

lol..
Unusual to see all that 'red' on the stump but it is very unusual to see it on the butt of the tree. Too thick on the hinge for that particular wood.

I’m thinking that a 3” hinge on a 3’ diameter white oak that has to go opposite its bulk might be cutting it way too thin ......... next time I should go thinner ? I’m also thinking it was just alot of weight hanging opposite of the intended fall direction

Your opinion and experience matters to me Jamie, I’m sittin in your classroom, and the bell just rang, I’m all ears teach !! Don’t sugar coat it either, I appreciate it !!!

Oaks pretty tough and will bend some. 3” hinge is what slowed progress and you had to work so hard driving them. 2” is about all I ever left on any of them once I got wedges set good.

F* all that!

That's what I 'd say too but it all seemed good and solid till the cracking and I was already halfway done. Then at that point I was almost done so I just figured I'd finish. I guess I could only ride it out or ride it down. I am glad it went smoothly and I didn't have to ride it down!

It takes a special kind of person to do that stuff.
I'm just a ground guy...

Yes! At 275lbs, climbing just isn't in my genes...[emoji16]

I don't mind being a ground guy by any means. I'd rather be on the ground! As for weight I go about 240. Not really in my genes either but I like the rush once and awhile. I really could've gone without that last rush for sure. Too close for comfort even for me!

Just got the noficiation for this video -- serious weight to defeat with that one big leader on the back ... WOW.
Nice job boys! I love the sinister laugh at the tail end of the video... NICE.

Nice job Kevin. Your son pushed it over the edge. Lol
Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

Were you fixing a thrown chain while Jason knocked her over?

Thanks men !!
Once I had two sets of double wedges pounded flush, the back cut gap had grown enough for me to know it wasnt going to go the other way.
I began to tickle the facecut and threw muh dang chain.
Thats when I asked him if he wanted to go grab some more wedges and I got to work getting the chain back in place. Boogered up a few links and I was trying to work them out when I heard him saying "Dad, Dad, DAD" !!

Had to laugh a little, I had wanted it to drop into that ugly black oak so the tree we felled wouldnt want to start rolling down the hill towards the fence ................. BULLSEYE !!!! Couldnt contain muhself !

Disclaimer: I had been crouched in that spot for a little while, I'm usually much more gracefull getting up. Hot dog, I'm getting old !!!!

British parents .......... nope, my Canabonics is strong as I work with a bunch of Canadians
"Canabonics" Ahhhahhhaa that is funny. I believe you. Canada is a big place. You wouldn't generally read that out west and the Newfoundlanders have a handful of Irish dialects pressured from almost 400 yrs ago.
They say Mother & Father but don't pronounce the -th- sound. How's your Muter..hows your Fater? "Me Muter & Fater are good" lol.
I was worried that the hinge was going to break and see the tree crash down on the fence as I trimmed up the backcut. I’ll measure that hinge thickness next time I take a walk back there.

Wedge placement: the busted red hat was the original, then we doubled up on the orange Stihl wedges, then we pounded everything flush and kept doubling up to the outside ........ she finally went over.
The “witness marks” show the wedges that did the most work
............

Deep or shallow hinge ......... I think fulcrum, so to me, once I determine that I’m going to wedge it over, I decide where the pivot point (hinge) to be. A more centered fulcrum and a single wedge probably would have worked, however, I wanted to be sure I had the leverage to lift against the weight over the fence

That's a common concern. I just experienced that not to long ago on a backleaner with a bunch of expensive equipment that was stored behind.(over in England). The tendency is to go a little thick. I didn't/don't have any real experience in that particular wood in a situation like that, to speak of anyway. I still have a hard time identifying hard wood species over here. Birch & Cherry look the same as out west but Alder & maple LOOK the same. Willow is actually a full tree that can look the same to me. My chainsaw agrees and I agree with the machine. I certainly still have a lot to learn..BUT DAM IT! I can guarantee you 100% that I am absolutely smarter than the piece of plastic the metal hits.. no matter what Continent I am on. That! I can truthfully tell you.

Hope I answered your questions Brother.
*smiles*

Glad those saws give you good service. I hate they discontinued those cylinders now.
The cylinders were effin great for the time I had them. They more than served me well and for many hours. I had to part with them all when I went back to the Mother land. I will just say it's a tough post to even write. I have heard they are discontinued.
Hopefully I will pick up a few of the new 372 oe and you can do something when you get a chance?

I’d like to find some stashed somewhere. I might get back into porting some stuff here and there if I can get a house deal worked out and get unpacked again.
