Photos were posted in another thread of Oregon 'look-alike' chains with no brand markings, but using the same numerical markings. I believe that I suggested they were 'counterfeit' or 'clone' chains.

I recently ran across several of these (.325 and 3/8 pitches) with some Jonsered chainsaws. Made me wonder if they might be Total brand chains, since both Total and Jonsered (until recently) were imported by Tilton Equipment, and I see a lot of Jonsered saws with Total branded bars.

Photo above is 3/8, .058 chain.

Anyone know?

Thanks.

I think your probably right Philbert. That chain looks like genuine Oregon without the Oregon stamp. Many of these companies make stuff for other labels.

Sure looks like Oregon chain produced with one of the types of the generic presets/ties they make. I have 2 types of ties, some with the line on the bottom and others with a dot in the middle, like Carlton ties.

If Oregon was making it for Total I would think the cost of tooling for new tie strap stamps wouldn't be that big a deal so why wouldn't they label the chain for them? Maybe Total didn't want to pay the setup charges?

On the other hand, Oregon is making 3/8 chain in China so it is possible that someone got the specs and is making a clone.

My interest is piqued.

I think that someone is making an Oregon copy. Might be Total. Might be someone else.

When Oregon makes chains for OEM saw use, the name of the company is usually stamped into the tie straps.

Here's a photo of some current production 73LPX that I have, they look exactly alike down to the finish of the spun rivets. Almost seems too identical to be a clone ... but who knows?

I'd say it's oregon made That looks exactly like husq varna branded chain I had I'll see if it's still around. Looks like they just didn't add the husq stamp on. Maybe they are just non stamped at all Who does total claim to be made by? Themselves? Or just stamped china or whatever

Cutters in all these pictures look the same tie straps look like lesser grade on those unmarked chains Maybe a way of making it a tad cheaper to manufacture I'd say oregon made it as there aren't a ton of companies making chain. Just my theory
