Yeah, thats what I figgered. What file size would be correct for this saw? It uses .325 pitch/.063 gauge.

I would think .325 uses 3/16" round files.

I use a 5/32” file just like the 3/8” picco on my .325 chain.

3/16 for semi and 11/64 for full chisel. Thats at least what the Carlton chart said at one shop I visit.

Thanks. I found a 16" Stihl chain for it in my saw boneyard that I forgot I had. Will give 3/16 a try since that looks correct to my eyes. What should the rakers be filed to?

Can I put a regular 034 cylinder on an 036? I know it’s a decrease in size but Free, vs $75+. If i can I’ll just make an 034 out of it. What do you guys think?

Yup. The 034 cylinder and piston are a direct fit. Not sure if you'd need a muffler spacer or not.

What ever it can handle. I use them Prferd 2 n1 file systems and love it. Kinda high priced initially but man they work great.

Several makers recommend about .025 to .030 for the rakers. 3/16" is the correct file size.
I also use the 2 in 1 file system. It does work well, but I don't use it every time I file. I mix it up a bit. I use the file guide when in the field to touch up.

I use a Husky raker gauge since the Carlton File-o-Plate is no longer available. Sets the raker relative to the length of the cutter, not at a prescribed increment. Has a 'soft' and 'hard' end for the cutting conditions. Only way to go imho.

I actually use the Oregon raker guide. Similar to that one you have. [emoji106]

I have the standard Oregon guide for the rakers, it works pretty good. Honestly, I have the best results doing the rakers by eyeball and test cutting.

Same here. Just take the same amount of strokes off each raker and adjust accordingly.

Pop that flat file out. Thats what I do to keep it from over doing the rakes. I really just like the feel and have both hands on the file guide helps me from making chain all snaggle tooth like lol

Hmm, might be the result of a hotspot. I wouldn't pay anything for it, that's for sure.

Filed the chain with the 3/16" and did the rakers last night. I don't remember where I got this chain but it looks like the previous owner just haphazardly sharpened it without regard to angles. The leading edge of most cutters was U shaped. Anyhow, the 25 degree setting seems to be what it was originally so that's what I used. Might have a chance to attempt some cuts with the 024 tonight, we shall see.

Hard to tell from the pic, but if those areas are smooth (no high spots) and are below the port (which it looks like they are) it could be run without a ton of concern.

The picture is look in from the bottom of the cylinder (it’s kinda upside down so it’s above the ports. )
