Those pictures sure bring back memories. All through the 70's and in the early 80's you could see those rafts in the Willamette just a couple of miles from my house and they could be seen from downtown Portland. I still saw a few big rafts at Cascade Locks in the 90's but don't much today.

The first sawmill was built in 1832 at the mouth of the Menominee River in the Upper Peninsula. The sawn lumber was loaded onto ships
