My 2 yr old son was recently bitten by a dog.
Not our dog, but a golden Retriever belonging to the daycare providers.
Please keep your young children away from strange animals.

So sorry that happened. I have a golden and he is very docile. Even sleeps with the kittens.
I'm not trying to give a bad rap to any breed.
I've never personally heard of a Retriever doing this either.
I am however trying to prove a point.
No matter what breed......this can happen.

My son has been around this dog since he was born. I've been around the dog 100's of times.
If I once thought my kids were endangered to be around the dog, I would've taken the necessary measures to keep them away.

I wasn't there when it happened, but apparently he leaned in to give the dog a hug.

Glad your boy is okay.We have a long haired german shepherd 10 years ago are oldest daughter got to close to his food while he was eating. He got her pretty good on the forehead.I took him out back had the gun loaded against his head.I couldn't pull the trigger he is 14 now and a big part of the family.

We have an Aussie/Border Collie mix.
She is a blessing to our family.
Extremely tolerant of any other being (except Landon's ferret).
If the kids get near her when she's eating, she simply walks away from her dish and comes back later.
However, if she ever did anything like this, I'm not sure what I would do. Common sense tells me to do what you attempted to do. But like yourself, I'm not I could follow through.
I hope I never have to find out.

First thing I taught my dogs was to let my wife and I take their food away anytime we wanted. It's a great way to develop alpha-ship. Also they cannot eat their food until they are given the command. Sometimes in the morning I put their food down and walk away and forgot to say ok.
Take a shower, get dressed, they are laying waiting for the command.
I love my dogs!

Adirondackstihl, I hope the boy is doing ok. I am thinking that he will remember the ordeal for a long time to come. He might be a little dog shy for a while.

I'm sure he'll remember it for a while as well but he isn't gun shy around our Aussie so that's good
