Part of my property was owned by 2 brothers. 1 was married. An affair ensued. The one brother murdered the other, dragged his body into the woods. There were 2 houses next to each other.
A few years prior, there was a house fire, 3 people died.
The new home owners (10 years later) were out playing croquet. Dude tosses the mallet in the air, takes the handle in the eye. My wife and I watched the flight for life land down the road.
Couple years later, dude up the road, flying a kite with his kid, running across the yard, trips, falls, takes a pipe in the eye. Scrambles his brain, now lives in a home.
That's the cliff-notes version of it all..
Not sure if that tops a house falling into the earth or not.

Funny, I don't remember Rosholt being that exciting.

It's not!
I'm pretty much straight south of you, 4 miles from the Marathon county line, east of Rosholt, not far off county road J.

Sounds like Ellis area. I used to ride the curves on J in younger days.
I fix some stuff for the King boys in this area.

North of Ellis.
Just south of Shantytown.
No relation to me, I'm a transplant to this area, moved here in 84.

I’m a couple hours NE of Custer. It’s a little bit touristy here in summer as well. The area was known for logging, the lakes and railroads to move the logs, and the foundry.

Today the area is most known for EJIW, now called EJ. They cast manhole frames and covers, storm sewer grating, and fire hydrants all over the world

A few years ago they built a new state of the art foundry about 10 miles away. The guys that come to the gtg from the south or east will recognize this as it can be seen for several miles away

I live roughly 30 minutes from Coloma, where James Marshall discovered gold and kicked off the gold rush. It's pretty much a solid, way too overgrown forest around me. Logging was big around here back in the day so I know a handful of old-time loggers and most of the saws my brother and I have are from those days.
The only large tourist-y places near me are Apple Hill and Coloma, so not many city-slickers work their way back to my neck of the woods. There's a tree farm about 1.5 miles up the road so in Oct. and Dec. traffic will pick up, but aside from that and the occasional pot bust it's pretty quiet.
We're on good terms with 99% of the neighbors, most of whom are 40+, and with wood stoves being a major source of heat people with saws are everywhere. Something kinda neat is my new next-door neighbor is the son of the founder of Arborist.com, the birthplace of AS.

NW Georgia here. My home is built on the side of a mountain, great if you’re a goat or deer. It is beautiful though, with a 180 degree panorama of the North Georgia Mountains from my upstairs guest room. Very few long straight roads. Crime on par with about everywhere else. Good weather most of the year. With the leaves up can only see the folks that live across the road. Still, nearest home is almost 1000’ away. Good if you like to run chainsaws!

Yeh, lots of history, I was born here in 66, so I’ve seen it change over the yrs. may be because I,m getting older, but it’s just too busy nowadays for my liking and the traffic with the bus lanes.. well it’s great if you like to use buses. There are rental bikes, and a lot of cyclists. I have a bike and do enjoy using it in the summer.
The good thing is plenty of bars, restaurants and shops,
Now those shops have been closed for the last..... yr. and I’ve seen it almost go back to the quieter way it used to be.

;)

Just another reason I think I live in God's country. This is at the cemetery of our church.

Mark and Lisa Schmidt captured this moment at a Memorial Day service in Bevent, Wisconsin when a fawn rested its head on the tombstone of a fallen soldier.

I live in a little town in Winona County, MN. About 25 min west of Winona, MN where I grew up. The town I’m in now started from being a water stop for trains heading west after climbing the hills coming out of the Mississippi river valley. Otherwise just a farming community. No cop or stop light. We like it this way - everyone has each others backs. Crime is low in town with only 400 ppl.. Now Winona has a much cooler history and I’ll try to give the short version: founded on the Mississippi river banks in the 1850’s it quickly became a booming lumber town as timber from up north was floated or brought by rail to be milled and shipped elsewhere. Winona is where United Building Center got it’s start from the early sawmill days.. Sadly, logging is a very small industry here anymore, in fact there’s lots of work to be done and not enough loggers to do it, so I have that going for me! Among other business’ started here are Peerless Chain, Fastenal, and many others that call Winona home and headquarters.. Crime is high in Winona (27k ppl) being it’s directly between the Twin Cities and Chicago, lots if drug related traffic.. I couldn’t wait to get out of there as a young man, even though I didn’t grow up “in town”.

Here’s a little article about UBC if you’re interested:
https://www.prosalesmagazine.com/business/united-building-centers_o

Edit: if you’re a history geek like myself sometimes, google Laird, Norton Lumber and you’ll get the rundown about how big the lumber industry was at Winona back then.

Ward, Colorado. Population 160. Elevation 9430’. It’s perched above the Colorado Front Range where the Suburban sprawl reaches from Wyoming to New Mexico. The town is a leftover from the Gold Rush. The whole place is tailings and random holes in the ground. I keep my eyes on the ground for gold nuggets. It’s windy as hell but I’m up against a wilderness and the continental divide. Great sunsets and plenty of snow.
