Recoil used to not bother me, then I separated my shoulder wrestling in College … for several years the 348 made me flinch like you don't want to know.

I'm much better now, but never 100%. I did enjoy downloading my 26" Octagon barrel 30-30 with 110 gr bullets loaded to the same velocity as factory 170 gr and used it for woodchuck hunting! Was a blast, and very pleasant to shoot, almost like a 22. And, I did not have to change the sight adjustment!

I can hold that long heavy barrel offhand better than any other gun I own. Was deadly on chucks to 100 yds with open sights (no peep).

I discovered I had a terrible flinch with my .41 Mag just last year. I was tightening my grip in anticipation of the shot, it was weird and I had no idea I was doing it. Made 200 rounds and played the dead chamber game with myself with empty brass so I couldn’t see an empty rotating up. Got rid of the flinch and had to re-zero both my revolvers...lol!

You ever shoot an 1892 or model 53 chambered in 25-20? I haven’t but I want one real bad for some reason. Bet it would be an awesome plinker with a lot more power than a 22

No Jeff, have Ruger (8), Winchester (3) , Remington (2), Browning, Glock, CVA (2), Lefever, Ithaca, and Savage. I also have a Frank Wesson Bicycle Pistol and a Remington Rolling Block 22. May be a few others I'm not thinking of. Also have knives by Colt, Winchester and Gerber (at least 4) and some others.

One of my Gerber's was sold through Cutlery Shop and has the SN - CS00036. It is a large sheath knife I use to make steaks when butchering deer.

No, but I was very tempted to get the Win 92 reproduction in either 357 or 44 Mag (which can also shoot special). Would be both a great plinker and great self defense gun.

I also used my reduced 30-30 hand loads in a 20" Mdl 94, but that went South during the divorce (it was hers).

My Uncle had a gun collection … Lots of real nice stuff, Levers, early autos, Hi Wall, Lee Navy, etc.

I worked doing taxes for my Dad since I was 14, then later did them on my own in addition to my full time job.

I resolved to buying one new gun or bow, etc every year during Tax Season. I gave it up years ago as I just did not want to maintain any more stuff.

I also traded away some stuff for something else when funds were tight (during the divorce). You always regret that stuff. I used to have a Savage with a 222 on top and a 20 ga 3" mag under, also a Ruger Stainless Bicentennial Single Shot 22/22Mag convertible pistol. Oh well! I didn't shoot them much.

That Savage with the .222 Rem. was made by Valmet for Savage. Highly collectible.

My 12 ga Savage is interesting also, looks just like an Auto 5, but I understand they are not related.

I was offered more than 3X what I paid for the 348 (by a cheap gun dealer) less than 2 years after I purchase it. It drove him out of his mind that I hunted with it. A few years later it was reported that he had committed suicide. The buzz on the street was that he had borrowed money from the wrong people. He was a real wheeler dealer.

No, 348 was only chambered in the Model 71, and vice versa. The Model 88 was in 358.

The 71 was a sporterized 86 with a 24" barrel and half length mag and curved lever. Was the only round ever produced in the Cal, I believe Hornady still makes the heads. Last I knew Winchester still made ammo, seems that sales will not die in Alaska.

The parent case for the 348 was the 50-110, and it has a profile similar to the 33 Win, which is derived from the 45-70. Both were attempts to bring black powder cartridges into the smokeless powder age. (33 Win was often chambered in the Mdl 86 Light Weight).

Thanks for correcting me. I was just heading back to this thread but you beat me to it. The Valmet info on the .222 Rem. Savage is correct. I’m batting .500, if I was a baseball player I would be getting $25,000,000 a year.

Likely the most beautiful rifle I ever saw, and wanted, was my Aunt's Model 95 Winchester in 30-06. It was done by Griffin & Howe, had a 24" barrel, nice checkering, and a curved lever.

When she sold it in the 70s it was worth thousands, I had no chance of purchasing it, but it was sweet!

Nice shot. I want to get into handgun hunting. I occasionally sit in thick brush with just my S&W Model 57 (.41 Mag), but the 4” barrel and factory sights aren’t ideal for longer ranges beyond about 25yds. Well, and neither are my distance shooting skills at the moment...lol!

Been a long time since I've run the S/N on them.
If I remember correctly the M70 is from '71.
And the M88 was '68.

Mike, do you recall what loads you were using in the 110 grain .30-30? Pistol/shotgun or rifle powder? I've been shooting the Lee 113 grain slugs out of my Mossberg 464 for awhile now with Unique. Most people praise Unique to the heavens for this sort of use but I've had very inconsistent groups. I'm thinking I might be better served with a fast rifle powder like 4198 or a magnum pistol/shotgun powder like 2400.

I know I’m gonna blow the spelling, try VitaVoruya. When I was bench shooting and a lot of varmint hunting this stuff was phenomenal. I would have to find all my loading data but these numbers should help. In my .22-250 the 5 shot velocity spread was 7 FPS. In .300 Win. Mag the spread was 13 and in .338 Lapua Mag the spread was only 27, and that was a 95 grain load with a 250 grain bullet at 2950 FPS.

I used N160 in the .22-250 and .300 mag and N165 in the Lapua.
