For me it is the same thought process with anything new or unfamiliar....check first and eliminate mistakes.

Yeah, with some stuff (like my pressure washer) I go through the owner's manual pdf and highlight stuff and add notes.
It's amazing how many ways there are to ruin a pressure washer. It almost seems designed to induce "operator error" failure!

I haven't toasted anything but I have got so close as to pour straight gas into a tank and caught the color difference.
Yea...the point is that you caught it because of being observant .

I fill a 6 gallon can at the station. All small 1 or 2 gallon cans in the shop are mixed gas only. I always put 4oz of oil into a 1 gallon washer fluid jug and fill it with gas. That way I know it's a gallon, rather than guess how much is in my can. Even at the pump, people will shut the pump off and drain the hose into their car or can. The next guy gets boned

I also always put oil in my mix can before I ever add gas. Also, all my two stroke mixes go into a particular type of fuel can and I never put straight gas in that type of can. I've never straight gassed a two stroke engine. I do however know someone that has mixed up the fuel tank and bar oil tank.

After I gave the guy back the 670 Echo he hands me a top handle Echo and a Jred. Can you fix these? NO!

I love when people drop off saws and ask can you look at it. Sure at $40 an hour. About half what local dealer charges and the independent around here turns chains blue and I don't think knows how to press and vac test a saw.

My chainsaw fuel can has this type filling spout, only one I have with this spout so no chance of mixing up fuel with straight gas, its on a 10 liter or 2.5 gal red plastic gas can for easy handling.

I've got a rep in the local community as someone that can fix up chainsaws better than stock from the factory. I had to just say 'NO', I'm not going to spend a lot of my time, energy, various spare parts and wear and tear on my tools just to fix up what they could do if they put in some effort.

I recently received a near new Stihl string trimmer that was going to the dump. The people thought I might be able to fix it up, so what the Hell, I might be able to fix it and use it.

Turned out to be a wasp nest in the muffler...

That last part is especially true. Hard to tell the guy who brings his 445 x torq to you that looks like its been dragged down a gravel road that its a POS thats not worth fixing lol.
It gets easier after a while... first time you kinda feel bad about it. Next time, you just smile when you say it. Sounds like he tried to tow start it by the sounds? :asz:

Well the saws are back with me. I pulled the 362 down and it wasn’t that bad and I was able to clean up the transfer.

The 362 is half a yo-yo. I told the person they are still under warranty and I shouldn’t look at them they need to go to the dealer. That way they can hear how expensive the mistake was since it was user error. Then maybe I can try to salvage them for the person, if they want to go that route. Busy enough as it is frankly.

Funny how if you just piddle with chainsaws for long enough they just start showing up at your door.
Yeah, I noticed that too...

THIS. Dad taught me to mix like this years ago when adding fuel for my dirtbike, and its the only way I feel comfortable mixing fuel for anything. The only exception I make is for the boat, when mixing 12 gallons individually would take half the day. But I admit...I don't like doing it haha.
