Storm Damage Clean Up Volunteering

It's simple here I've been cutting for 35+ years and this is a remote area.
I live on a ridge with high winds
With 40-70 ft tree's bordering both side's of the road live and dead tree's block the road occasionally to go to work or home.
I clear the road everyone's great here they will help i had to drop a large heart rot hickory in the road recently and they hooked up to it and pulled it off the road when i was blocking took 10 minutes.
Plus i always pack a saw with me no one has the saws capable of large tree's on this road but me lol
i cut for neighbor's friends and family danger tree's or storm damage the dead ash keeps me busy.

Most trees that come down during storms here are in the forest - that is the contracted Croatian forestry company's job to clean up.
Sometimes they extract only quality logs and give away permissions for cleanup to private parties - the extracted wood is still being charged for though, and only downed and marked tree's are allowed to be processed.

I would volunteer for cut it up jobs.
Sooo, who's gonna get me a plane ticket, secure food and shelter and make sure a Dolmar PS-6400/7300/7900 is at my disposal?

I too think that neither parties should be taken advantage of, not the homeowner in need, nor the contractor, and the least the volunteer!

Decades ago when Stihl released their new 'Oilomatic'™ chain the high volume dealers were given some super enlarged display chain that sat on a stand to show the groove in the drive link that delivered more oil to where it should be. On eBay in AU a seller has this item in its original box for sale. I thought of Philbert when I saw it as he could really use something like this but the starting bid was $250-au so that was the end of that. But its a cool piece of super large metal chain.

There are also 'organizations OF disaster organizations' that work together at the national and state levels, which can be a good way to find a group that you might be interested in:

I did not see any departments for "tree removal cleanup" or anything chainsaw related with either of these organizations. But yes, there are other ways to volunteer. I am sure it is a liability issue.

The last storm my State had (A microburst that took down hundreds of trees), I cut wood for 9 days straight, morning til dark. In an area that was about 2 square miles. Neighbors were coming out of the woodwork seeking me when they heard my saws running. I did not charge anyone. There were many tree companies that were just sitting in parking lots waiting to be called. I cut non stop. LOL
Go figure.
Never actually cut a tree down, just cut up what nature took down.

Actually we don't sit and "wait" to be called, we're contracted by the power company (we're also in the IBEW union and are electrical hazard certified) and already know what needs to be done. We're just sitting there watching the cluster f#uck of hacks making a mess of everything.

Wasn't directed at you or anyone or volunteer groups in this thread. But the majority of what it is, is hacks trying to make a quick dollar and making everything more dangerous for us to go in and clean up, and in some cases making it harder for the power company to get through to get the power back on.

I guess you gotta look at it from my boots.

Oregon sells these for much less in their forestry catalog, but still a bit pricy. I use a short length of 3/4 pitch harvester chain (twice as big in every dimension), and only about $1 per link.

I did not see any departments for "tree removal cleanup" or anything chainsaw related with either of these organizations.

Look for 'debris removal', or call and ask; they will route you to some people in your area. Might take a couple of calls to reach the right folks.

I hear you. There are some wahoos out there for sure.
On the same token, there are some pretty skilled guys who can cut wood, but do not necessarily cut wood for a profession.
But I can understand where you are coming from. [emoji106]
