Ok ,sorry I'm thick.
Does the oil increase by shortening the stroke of the gear shaft or by lengthening it?
I understand that the gear turns with the worm on the crankshaft but how does changing the offset of the shaft gear increase the flow ? Not totally up to snuff on this.

The offset limits how far up and down the stroke of the oiler can go. By making the stroke longer, the oiler outputs more.

Ok so hypothetically I could sand the ramp or tit on the adjustment screw for more stroke?
Sand the sides of the oiler button with a small burr until it’s diameter is smaller. And you want to make sure it is still round after you are done. You don’t want to sand the height of it. Then there is a point where the oiler button exceeds what the ramp can do... then you have to sand the low side of the ramp to achieve more travel (with a dremel cutoff wheel). A good starting point is .010 - .020 off both. I have noticed variation in these oilers so error on the low side. Check how much oil is left over after the gas runs out. You can always take more off. It is difficult to explain this stuff typing it, easier to take apart the oiler and study it. It will make sense after a while.

Thanks a bunch! After "hot rodding my 034 I'm running a 25" /24" es bar on it and its struggling to keep it lubricated.
I may be a little spoiled though I'm used to having a manual button as well.

I notice it too, some stihl are a little stingy with the standard pump. Enlarging the oiler hole in the bar seems to be a hack fix... but it does nothing but make the problem worse imo, since there is less pressure. Result... you clog the hole more easily. The only real fixes are either modding the pump or thinner bar oil.

Haha, ofcourse I enlarged the hole! But honestly I didn't go to far and it sort of made sense ,but I agree with you ,it hasn't helped my situation one bit.
I did put a nos oil pump on my 088 and enlarging the oil passage on the long bar did seem to help quite a bit.

I just moded the pump for my asian 660 rice burner and it oils like crazy.. It's not really good oiling since the asian pump is not machine precisely enough at the ramp and the offset. This thread is good.

All this silly Stihl talk...but the saws that need it most are the Makita/ dolmar 6401 and 7900
Those actually do alright with a new fresh control bolt. But on higher hour ones after the bolt wears down they are more stingy (it is made of plastic and wears eventually). It’s pretty easy to take those oilers apart, replace the control bolt and mod the ramp in the process.

Hmm... it is easy to orient control bolt in the wrong orientation when installing it and fubar it when the roll pin is put back in. I fugged up the first one I did, and had to re do it. They usually oil up to about a 28” ok stock. My modded one oils a 32-36” easily.

Offset controls the stroke. Rotational stroke not linear stroke.

I know but do you know how many times people have advised drilling the bar to increase flow in oiler threads!!!:confused: Seen it many times lol
