I've got a customer's MS661C here and I simply can't get it to idle, it will come off revs and kick over a couple of times but then invariably die. In the absence of a LA screw, I'm a little stumped. I've checked the diaphragm and metering lever height, replaced the fuel filter and reset it numerous times but no joy. Cuts and runs beautifully at revs too. Yes, it does have the 4701a coil and Black solenoid.

The carb does have this little stop on the throttle, but the workshop manual says that you must NOT adjust it as it is set from the factory and will cause running problems. Has anyone else experienced this issue? any solutions out there? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

It will run as long as the tank as fuel in it - as long as I have my finger on the throttle. As soon as I try and let it idle it will die. Also, when starting it I have to use the 'Start' position even when it is hot. As you say, it could well be the solenoid, but, it does run perfectly otherwise.

Did you test the compression? Engines with low compression don't idle worth a hoot, even though they may run at WOT.

The saw has been completely gone through as the sparkplug thread had stripped. Its had a bgd, timing advance and muffler mod and pulls 165psi of compression.
