For kicks this afternoon I was cruising around Stihl Canada's website to see if there was any info on the new 261CM or 362CM (couldn't find anything) and noticed the pricing on saw is CHEAP!!!

We've known the current 261CM was on for $599.95CDN but just noticed 461's for $1050CDN and 461VW for $1150, cheaper than some U.S. pricing I could find. Considering that the U.S $ buys about $1.39CDN right now if you are looking for a new Stihl it's time to come up here for a visit...

The 261 has been on sale for that price in Canada for some time now. That is for the older model 261 though, not the new one coming down the pipe. With the CDN dollar in the tank (today it is at 72 US cents on the dollar) there are deals to be had up north. But there is also the high sales tax there, upward of 15% in some provinces. And there are the added dollar exchange rate and shipping costs to consider. Some saws are about the same there as here (like the 362), and some saws are a lot cheaper there (like the 261, 461, and 661).

The new vs old 362 and 261 stats (on paper at least):

Stihl 261 type I: 11.5 lb., 3.9 HP
Stihl 261 type II: 10.8 lb., 4.1 HP (I think this will be listed as 4.0 HP in the US)

Stihl 362 type I: 12.8 lb., 4.7 HP
Stihl 362 type II: 12.3 lb., 4.8 HP

I know the 261 has been on sale for a while but this is the first time I have seen it for that price on the website. Prior to today it was listed at $729.95 even after my dealer had quoted $599.95. I hadn't looked at 461's as I have an MMWS044 but saw one locally on Kijiji for $650 which I thought was a pretty good deal but hadn't looked at the new price in too long to know it off hand.

Depends on where on the web you look. There are dealer web site listed prices (with in-store price specials) and there is the generic Stihl Canada price list. My "dealer" in North Vancouver, BC still has the 261 listed as $719.95, but they quoted me $599 when I asked last month.

The 461 is also slated to be EOL and will likely be replaced with the newer spring loaded M-tronic model. That is probably why they are also being blown out now. At $1050 CDN: In BC the tax is 12% and the exchange rate is 3% for 15% total added cost, plus shipping which is is $60 USD here by UPS. So at 72 US cents on the CDN dollar, the saw shipped to me would be $930 USD. If I go there and pick it up I could save the shipping cost and get the tax rebated, for $778 USD. Locally the 461 is $1,090 USD.

At $600 CDN the 261 would be $550 USD shipped, and $450 USD if I went up there and picked one up. Locally the 261 is $610 USD.

Australian and Canadian dollar are about the same. A cent or 2 in it

In Australia

MS 261 CM $1599
MS 461 magnum $1999

That sucks!

Seems that you could cash in on the cheap saws in Canada. Maybe get a 261 saw shipped to Oz from Canada for under $1000 AUD, and a 461 for under $1500. I know a cool Canuck that can er, well, um... maybe do something like that.

I will tell you what I am seriously considering.
selling my my old 026 and 039 and consolidating the funds to buy an MS362 CM
I think one of these would be the perfect match to my 066 as a firewood team.

I don't know if I'd turn loose the older Stihl saws, but let me not help you. Stihl breaking mine in.

We prefer not to talk about Shane over here. He originally came with a new screen name, made a total asshat of himself and ended up asking Randy to Ban him so he couldn't come back.

I guess one of the things that amazes me most about these prices is that we are ALWAYS more than the U.S. Even two years ago when our dollars were par with each other everything was about 20% higher here.

That gets a SpongeBob full laugh!

Amusing. WC90 got into it with me over on AS over CDN saw prices. I was banned from that AS thread over it (I was not even aware that they could ban you from a single thread until I was given notice). Anyone can verify those prices on the CDN Stihl web sites though. Its not rocket science.

That for sale thread on AS was total *s-worde. The OP either got taken and was trying to recover or trying to rip someone off with his sale price.

Again, sorry if I got you booted from that thread. All I was trying to do was point out the hypocrisy of how the Trading Post was moderated. Jon's thread got closed twice and that one didn't even get warnings or anything after 5 pages of discussion that didn't include the OP or have anything to do with the sale.

I would keep the 026. Prices on the 362 in Canada are not nearly as good now, and I can still buy them cheaper here. The real steals there now are on the sale saws: the 261 and the 461.

362 here: $730 USD, no sales tax in Oregon. Canada price is $930 CDN ($670 USD) plus tax, shipping and exchange would be $820 USD. Still cheaper if I went up there and bought one in person. Not that I want a 362 though. I prefer the 361.

No worries. My beef with WC90 there was that he was defending the OP price, when I had quotes for over $300 less for the same new arctic saw, delivered to my door. Never mind my CDN price quotes that he said were bogus. Meh...
