Wonder why they changed the angle? Maybe the 30's and 25's stay sharper longer?
Yes very likely. I found another pamphlet around here calling for 45 degree top. These are very old I'll guess 50 or 60s Usually the more angle the faster it cuts. Less it holds an edge longer. This has been my experience

After actually reading it It mentions "chipper" type chain. I'm not sure if that's an old school way of saying semi chisel ?? @Philbert may know.
yes yur right "chipper" chain
View attachment 58037 View attachment 58040 The second image here doesn't really pertain. I liked the chain character However this old Oregon chain also called for 35 degree angle. I don't know if that chain was semi or full chisel though
it was semi , because that file of mine is set at 35 degree and pferd site it showed the chain as semi

'Chipper' is old school chain, still used on some harvester applications, since it keeps cutting, although slowly, in dirty wood. Hard to find for hand held saws, although, some of the Chinese manufacturers list it in their catalogs.

Full-Chisel looks like the number '7'; Chipper looks like a question mark '?'. Semi-Chisel falls in between.

As far as the angles go, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- the designs of the cutters have changed over time, using different shapes and angles. So you may need to file a different angle on one cutter, to get the same final, or resultant angle on another cutter (if that makes sense);

- saws have changed since some of those directions were printed; newer saws cut with much higher chain speeds;

- manufacurers' recommendations are based on 'average' users, cutting 'typical' wood, etc. They should be considered as starting points, rather than optimum for every wood species, saw, cutting situation, etc.

P.S. I would love to find one of those old Oregon chain vises!

I would also like to find one of those vices. I sharpen in a bench vise. Works real well actually. You just have to position the tooth to the rear of the vise

IMG_0057.JPG Something like this. It's a tooth at a time However if you kinda want to get surgical. You can lock a tooth down and work gullets back and have completely free motion of the file

I just hand file too without s guide. Most of my chain has no witness marks. In all honesty though.... no one can keep them perfect. After 6 8 sharpening. I hit em with a little crappy grinder to true them up then I start at em again with the file. The process is a cycle.
How close are all those top plates to being exactly the same @jake wells

This is free hand since new. Carlton a1. Very sharp and fast as any of my chains. While close there is no way each and every tooth are exactly the same Me and a guy on as had a fairly in depth conversation on grinder vs free hand. A grinder is your friend after a while for the simple fact of true consistency. So a guide will also keep it close. The only time I'm real real funny about how perfectly true a chain cuts is when falling a tree. After it hits the ground honestly anything that cuts is fine enough for me
