Setting up my 051 with a 36" Tsumura bar. I cut a mix of hard and soft woods that are sometimes a little bit dirty from being on the ground. What would you guys recommend? Full skip or full comp? The 051 is 89cc and it's setup with a .404 7 tooth spur sprocket. The bar is .063 gauge.

It will cut better with 3/8 most likely, but I’m sure a old torque saw like that would pull .404

Thanks Mason. However 051 stuff is getting hard to find. I did a bunch of looking on eBay for a 3/8 setup for it and didn't have much luck as mine is an early one and the oil pump drive components are a bit weird.

3/8 with 8T rim cuts netter than my .404 with 7T rim wearing a 24" bar went to roller nose on the 3/8" cuz of chain speed (pricey) Oregon drum on the older oil pump

On mine I have the pin drive oil pump drive. Took me forever to find the right drive worm gear and drive plate since it was all broken when I got it. I've been searching for 3/8 stuff for it with no luck.

Mine pulls .404 7T just fine full comp with 30 degree grind. Ive never cut a big softwood but I bet that would be fun to watch the chips grow.
I am sure you can search 050, 051, 075, 076 etc. Wonder if Oregon makes a rim sprocket for it?
So I looked it up they do. Part # 22271x (power mate system) 22273 just the rim. Or OEM 1111 640 2026.

They used to. The ones on eBay don't have the correct oil pump drive configuration. And anyways she was pulling a 21" with .404 .063 RM full comp in red oak with a 7T sprocket just fine. Just ordered the bar last night.

You may wish to verify.. The Oregon I bought looked (To Me) to fit either one of the oil pumps or square/rectangular tangs, that go 9 oclock to 3 oclock. Just drove out the pins in the spacer plate but don't remember all the details at the moment. I am thinking there is a pump drive that has a slot off center so I reserve being sure until some one more familiar experience jumps in. If you swap tips to the new bar it would run 3/8" fine My 051 really wakes up when you compare the saw using 3/8" 8 Tooth rim to the 7 Tooth .404 both with 24' bars but the .404 is a hard nose bar.

I don't remember what it used for the drive. I don't feel like taking it apart again. I'm just going to run the .404 .063 semi chisel full comp Oregon chain and see how it does.

Semi chisel .404 seems like a great setup for dirty wood. Plus, you guys, he has a nice running 346, so if he needs a saw that cuts fast, he can use that one!

Full comp will be smoother. Full skip will have a lot less cutters to mess with when sharpening.

Plus the saw would have originally setup for .404. Thanks man the 346 is a little rocket! I also have a nice running 034 that does excellent too. I'm also on the hunt for a 60ish cc Husky to build/mod like the 346.

I looked at mine last eve and it has a rim sprocket on it. So I assume it wld be a quick change over to .375. Now I have to remember to look on sprocket shelf to see if I have another.

Dang. I just went looking for that bar to buy it and it’s gone. Guess I was too slow.

I would go with skip on a bar that size with .404. Full comp is probably a bit much for that saw to pull with .404 36” in hardwood.
