Hi all,

Recently got a stihl 044 in rough condition. The saw had an aftermarket cheapo fuel filter on it, and the carb filter was blocked solid. As is often the case with non running saws it was then pillaged for bits. The clutch cover and exhaust are both missing, but I'm not too worried as I can replace those with chinese ones no problem. The air filter cover and element has also been lost. The base plate and spitback guard are still present. There are some fairly cheap clone HD filter kits for the 044, is it worth upgrading? Are the clone kits any good for fitment? Or shoukd I srick with the standard setup and just get the missing bits? I would use a genuine stihl air filter regardless. In addition, the base of the rear handle has been bent so are the chinese fuel tanks any good? I am aware it will be an MS440 tank not an 044 tank. Or am I better off repairing the handle in the tank I already have?

Cheers in advance!

I can't comment on the 044, but the Blue 660 plastics looked good on mine before I sold it. Where they as "stiff" no, but it worked.

I bought the Farmertec cover pieces for my 066, unfortunately I had an early model 066 and the pieces are moulded for the later model 066/660s. I only spent about $10 so I wasn't too worried and went on eBay to get the pieces that would fit my saw.

I put Farmetch covers and tanks on two saws i dyed black. If these were selling saws I'd always use oem. Both have held up and fit perfect.

The filter itself should be replaced with OE. Yes, there is that big a difference.
As long as the cheap plastics fit well, why not?

I've used plenty of them to get old busted ms440s going again they work fine the only thing I would do would the OEM kill switch and filters and hoses that stuff is still fairly cheap at the dealer.
