I'm in the process of freshening up an 038 Mag 2 with unknown history for firewood use that had been sitting for who knows how many years and the owner is debating what topend to use. The original early casting topend with new rings/new piston and rings or a new complete later casting topend?
The current condition of the rings are sitting at a gap of .014". Owner had recently acquired the saw and states it had good compression and wasn't short of power with a 25" bar in hardwood it just didn't run right.
The original cylinder looks to have a coarser casting finish in the ports, slightly smaller intake, larger straighter more square transfer tunnels and has a larger exhaust port.
The newer casting looks alot smoother but sits the other way with a slightly larger intake, looks like smaller tapered transfer tunnels and smaller exhaust port.
The overall port timing looks to be identical without more accurately measuring it.
Did Stihl detune the Mag 2 or give it a boost with these kinds of differences? Any helpful input would be appreciated.
