Redneck vac test. Strip the saw down, leaving the starter, get it idling and spay carb cleaner (using the straw) short bursts around anywhere that can suck air.

I did the "redneck" test.....notta . I thought it was probably a worn carb throttle shaft....not. I did try a new coil......but I used the used old sparkplug cable.......hummmmm???

It's driving me nuts...... what I thought was an air leak originally was a very, very slight one around the flywheel side seal. Replaced both and retested and the hold pressure and vac forever. I have ultrasoniced the carb twice, kited it,adjusted, sealed. Tryed new carb and it still was the same.
Didn't seem like ignition but I was outta things to try so I put a new coil on, ( I did use the old wire though) still the same.

I have never and 0 mean never seen anything like this.

Original plug was a light gray with not really any build up. I have tryed a new plug......same results.

Thinking maybe I should just port it so it will run up there with no issues. That way I can try a carb mod I have in mind for it!!!

check for shielded bearings if its an early red lever model.not saying that has anything to do with your problem....... but everything else has been covered and i ran into an erratic air leak a few years ago that lead to a sudden lock up when everything else checked out.

Ya, Jug it's not quite the red lever but that may be something. I did check the bearings for play and they seemed good.....was thinking of maybe a crank wobble......or something......

if the bearings looked clean your probably ok.the one i ran into had some crud in the bearings which washed crud into the seal lips.im sure with enough buildup even a new seal would pucker out sooner than later.
