So I know this an old thread but I’m rebuilding my grandfathers old saw an 024 AVS. I bought a kit of eBay that was complete garbage. I bought a rebuild kit off Amazon with a new crank P/C & crankshaft, all these parts are for an 026. From what I understand it’s possible to upgrade this saw to an 026 since it’s a super.

Is the original crank trashed? If not, I would definitely re-install it with new bearings. The 024 AVS has the same 32mm stroke as the 026...not sure if the rod length is any different on the 024 S crank and the 026. And yes, it is possible to upgrade to a 44mm bore jug....maybe even the 44.7 with some clearancing work. @drf256 could set you straight if you have more questions.

So the original crank I accidentally stripped the threads some when I took the flywheel off!
I read somewhere that the throw/pitch of the cranks were different so if I upgraded it to an 026 then I would need a new crank.

I’m gonna attach better pics of my OEM p/c seems like they might be good not sure. My novice eye did not see any gouging or scoring.

You have to remember that an 024 is sub 3 cubic inch .I for one have much better options for a 3 cube cookie cutter .However that said with a muffler rework they are handy little things for lighter work . They are light as a feather for one plus real easy on gas .With a 16 inch bar running .325 chisel will handle 14" stuff just not real fast .When you get my age a light saw has it's merits .

Same crank. Just an expensive endeavor to rebuild and port. I’d just rebuild it as is and use it. Maybe a muffler mod.

In my opinion changing an 024 into basically an 026 is like some grafting an 038 Magnum cylinder to an 038 AV .When quite honestly more magnums were made than AV's .What would be the point of doing all that work other than to prove it can be done ?

I did it but I doubt I will ever do it again:

It was a stronger saw (I think) but I never saw it run when it was new. I doubt it would stay even with an 026 PRO, including the one that I still own.

So I am replacing the bearings on this 024 AVS, how are the bearings oriented in the case? Is the open side face inside the crank or outside ?
