We had a BNSF wreck come into out shop a few weeks ago. I had to fly it to stumps so we can commence the work.

They are General Electric 4,400 hp EVO I believe they are tier 3 or 4 engines. Man those are the tallest engines that I've ever seen. From the oil pan to the top of the engine is something like 9ft when we have them on stands sitting on the ground!

Wasn't there also a 6000 horse version?

Yes, AC6000CW's they had almost every one converted to a 4400hp and called them C44ACM's, I think CSX called a few of them CW46AH's but all those German built 6000hp prime movers were taken off the ones used for real service.

Yup a collaboration with Deutz MWM to build the big one. Called it a "7fdl" and they didn't last long as they swapped in the later "evo" 4400 & 4600hp motors of the current GE's in the early 2000's . Had a couple running the Albany to Boston line here in their early years. NOW the "converted" ones slide on by from time to time on the CSX main

Hmm, I'm hardly an expert on locos but I thought the FDL series dated back to Cooper-Bessemer and never got beyond 3k or so horsepower.
Could be, I'm not much on the GE's, they used the "label" but obviously German roots have nothing in common with the Cooper-Bessemer days
