I have never heard of a BB 460 running very well, maybe just no room for the transfers.

I have a 460 that Dr Al ported that runs very strong. Randy was kind enough to give him port timing #s that he said I would like … Randy knows I like torque!

24" is a good size for the 460, especially since you have a 395.
Ok, intresting. Bigger is not always better. I will try it with the bb, and if it not runs that good i put a 52mm on it.
I guess there will be a bit less vibrations with a 52mm.

It is the torque one wants! I dont understand those people just hunt rpms when not in wood, but it is good we are different! :-)

A properly ported 460 is a very stout saw!

People rave about the 10mm 044, and they are good saws. I own one after all. But a stock dual ported early 046 cylinder is a very stout saw. I ran one for a long while and was completely happy with it. And I have to admit I've been looking for one locally at a good price for a while now.

The Las two ms440s I've built have the D shaped combustion chamber and with some port work those things rip I can tell you they will flat out out cut a stalk 044 never though I would ever say that I've always loved the 044s but that's how it is.

All 044 and 440s are D chamber, as are the New West 440 BB jugs.

But only the 1st year 046s were D jugs. All the other 046 and 460s are Hemi, which some builders prefer.

I did build a Hemi 460 with just a timing advance and base gasket delete and it ran very strong. #s were Sq .018, Ex 105, Tr 127, In 75. I just recently sold it to a local Tree guy. Can't keep everything, but it was a good running saw.

My 044 did not have the D combination chamber it was a standard combination chamber.

What #s are you using?
Not this time I'm keeping these numbers to myself and seems like every time I post my numbers there's always someone who thinks there not good enough so for now the numbers are staying on in my book for now sorry Mike don't take this in a bad way.

Never seen anything but a D chambered 044 cylinder. I’d love to see pics. U sure you’re not thinking of the 046 you’ve built?

Everyone has an opinion, but if something runs well and works for you, then keep doing it. Many refrain from doing threads because the peanut gallery will tell them how wrong they are doing it with little substantial proof at times. Don’t let it stop you from posting stuff, but by all means you can keep your cards close to the vest if you choose to.

Lol I wish I could could show you pictures of it yes it Was a 044 I had it for ruffly 13-14 years I traded it for for a 064 and yes it had a normal hemisphere combination chamber. It was a was in the middle of the early and late model 044 so is it possible there were some odd ball cylinders possible and it was a stihl cylinder. If I run across it again I'll be more than happy to show. And for the port timing numbers I do understand what your saying but I'm sure you can agree with me on this if you find something that works really really well I'm sure you're keepen that to yourself otherwise we would be bored because know one would want us to port their saw's they would just take all of are info and do it themselves now I don't mind sharing some of my port work and numbers but I can't just give it all away. So I hope you guys don't give me the boot now because I do injoy chatting with you and help trouble shooting your all a great group of people. :beer-toast1:

DO you know what serial #'s and what to look for in an early 046?

Not exactly, but I have a ball park. If a saw came from the factory with a DP muffler cover, it is a real D chamber Magnum saw!

All of the 046 start with 1 (made in Germany) and have 9 digits. Somewhere between 138****** and 140****** they stopped making D jug cylinders.

I believe the 1st year release in the US was 1996/97.

The base is different on a D jug, one is tapered, one is stepped, I forget which is which. But, sometimes you find the right SN only to find out the jug was replaced!

Anyone with a D jug and a SN please contribute, I would like to narrow the range.
