Yes indeed I was mistaken I just looked and the shortest land route is to the north. I thought Traverse City was further to the south. That is not a bad thing though as that way he does not have to go through the corner of Slumville IL

About a 1300 mile drive RT from where I live, without the ferry.

The ferry usually closes the end of Oct., and the fee for a car is $130 (IIRC) plus the per person fee. And the tax. Ferry ride is 2.5 hours plus the on and off waits, which could make it longer than or the same as drive time.

Years ago when I worked for the Corp of Engineers the nickname for the Illinois River was the Chicago chit ditch. That was because that is where Chicago dumped their chit. When the Asian Carp started overtaking the river the DNR and Fish and Wildlife wanted to stop the transport of goods from Lake Michigan to the Illinois River in an attempt to keep the Carp out of the lake. The news media was broadcasting it over here and kept referring to it as the Chicago "ship" canal.
We knew what they really meant.

It is 82F here now and it is 10:19AM

All tow boats must be south of or lock and dam by December 15.
They do not always make it. In 1991 one ended up in the dam. I have seen 8 inches of ice in the river before that.
I am betting up your way by December 15 folks are driving RV's on the lakes to fish

Thanks man! Yes I carved them. Most of the work was done with a chainsaw. I did sell some this year but I’m so slammed with tree work that I didn’t have much free time to devote to making them.
