Mine are S30V or CM154 in the Benchmade. I want to try a VG10 bladed one next.

I love VG10, 154cm never really wowed me, and S30V is nice but it is really a challenge to sharpen. VG10 doesn't hold out as long as the other two, but a monkey (like myself) can make it shave. I really love it for the ease of maintenance, it's really enjoyable to sharpen, not like you have to sit down and be stubborn to get it right.

I don't have a problem sharpening the S30V on diamond stones. I would like to try a VG10 blade next if I can find one in something I like.

Yeah I actually just got done doing some re-profiling of one of my s30v spydies on a diamond stone, not as difficult as I remembered. My favorite one is not made anymore, but now they offer the delica and endura in a flat grind, so I would grab one of them to check out VG10. I think the 3mm stock is better for most folders anyway, I have a couple 4mm spydies (paramil and something else I traded for) and they just don't have that hot knife through butter feel that the 3mm flat grinds do.

Finally got around to rounding up the family for a picture. Up top we have grandpa's old Remington hunting knife. Still sharp as can be, but I don't really ever use it. Strictly around for sentimental purposes. Next up is my Gerber dive knife. Have had it the longest of all pictured, but hasn't really seen much use. I don't dive, but's the one I take out on those now rare trips in a canoe or kayak. Then comes the Benchmade Adamas fixed blade. D2 tool steel and very sharp. It is my hiking, camping, climbing rope cutting knife. Last but not least is my Benchmade Gaucho. My everyday workhorse that goes everywhere with me. Used and abused but still smooth folding as the day I got it. I'm really quite impressed as to how well its held up to the torture for the past twelve years. I really wanted a benchmade tanto folder. After browsing the full line catalog that's the one that caught my eye. Was part of their NRA Outdoors line. Modified tanto with a recurve which is basically gone from years of sharpening. It's faded, chipped, and nicked, but I still love it. If they still made them I would pick another one up in a heartbeat. Looked a lot nicer in the pocket of my three piece suit at weddings when it was still gun metal grey handle with black blade and pocket clip. Would especially love to find one with the limited edition CPM M4 blade.

It is Benchmades Axis lock. This is an auto knife. I'm a LEO and have carried this knife on duty for 10 years now. This is the second blade and has been rebuilt by Benchmade twice due to the auto spring breaking. Benchmade has excellent customer service.

I like this style auto because you can still pull the Axis lock back and flick the blade open if the spring breaks.

Here a few of my favorites. Some are kept in my pack for work. I have a few more ESEEs, but they have been sent for new kydex sheaths.

They are from left to right, top to bottom:
Liam Hoffman hatchet, ESEE 5, 4, 3, Mora Bushcraft, Mora Companion HD, Mora fillet, Cold Steel Trailmaster, SOG multitool, Leatherman Wave, Benchmade Nimravus, Benchmade Auto Presidio (5000), Benchmade Nimravus Dive, Benchmade Aeries (730).

All these knives except the fillet knife are used regularly.

I have a lot of old Case, Hen and Rooster, Old Timers, and Bucks at my fathers.

Who uses water stones to sharpen? I switched from diamond stones to water stones from Norton. I can't afford the true Japanese water stones.

I have a 4"x10" dual sided diamond stone, fine & xtra fine, that I use to sharpen knives, chisels, hand planes, scissors, anything else it will work on.

Are they solid diamond surface or like the DMT style? I still use diamond stones when I don't feel like soaking stones.

It's a 15 year old DMT cheese grater style. DMT does make some that are solid these days that look nice. Mines been good to me and still works well for most things so I can't really complain, but sometimes on finer tasks it can be an annoyance.

I've had the best results using the DMT dia-sharp/solid diamond stones....not the one with holes. Usually the 600 grit is all it needs but I also have finer grits. The DMT's also get my swedish axes very sharp. I have to use diamond stones on my Lile D2 steel. My old arkansas stones don't work well with D2 but they're great on the Randall 0-1 steel.
