Very Nice AJ. I like the shape of the axes.

So what’s the next story on my Collins you mentioned last night?

When collins made the HB pattern the voyager tomahawk style there style and finish was of a better quality , as with all these companies in the the last century
Information is sketchy and there’s more blanks than answers

I’ve been messaging a norlund collector who has the full house he thinks they made and he is now collecting other HB styles made by Collins
The steel is much harder on the Collins and the one below

This axe below was supplied over here it’s got the original handle and the old dealer I’ve known since a kid said it was offered by Oregon in the late 70’s early 80’s I have cleaned it up and oiled and polished the handle

I couldn’t beleive my eyes after asking him have you got any old axes out back
That you would be willing part with And he brings out a couple of older elwell types and this one all faded and rusty , I was freaking stoked and also
Thinking how the hell did Oregon get involved with this Hudson Bay pattern

This head is better steel than the norlund it’s harder too sharpen it’s polished off and finished better

The reason I wanted more photos @XP_Slinger was so I could compare with this Oregon hatchet and it’s the same as your Collins

All the norlund axes I’ve got here have cross lines on the top and underside of the axe and are all quite rough until rubbed down a bit

I’ve added photos so you can see the differences between the finish on the norlund and the Oregon

Photo 1 is the Oregon
Photo 2 is norlund
Photo 3 is norlund

How can you not like that axe the style is awesome you can stick it down behind your belt and off you go
Wow thanks for all the info AJ! Very interesting to see the difference between the coveted Norlund and my Collins. I’m very surprised there’s such a difference in the steel as you mentioned. I was excited to get a Collins HB, being that Collins is the oldest axe manufacturer in the US I was happy to grab it. It may not be turn of the century but it is still a great ax in my opinion. Thanks again for sharing all the info bud.

All this good info and cool pics is why I love this thread.
The polls on those look very different. Very beefy.
And I guess some forges were better than others? Or they were experimenting with different metals?
Nonetheless, very nice axes for sure from both of you.
Keepem comin. LOL

That looks like a real nice splitting head.
it is indeed and razor sharp. I would say it's the perfect camp type tool especially for splitting chores, with obvious limitations in splitting due to it's size, mainly the short handle, for small to medium work it excels.
The Wetterlings doesn't seem to have quite the reputation as GB but I honestly don't understand why ?? They are so similar you'd swear they came from the same factory (as they do now with the GB buy out)
I'm glad I grabbed some Wetterlings models before they were all gone. Still a few places around have some inventory left but there is no more production so.......

It’s a pleasure sharing all this stuff it keeps all these different axes alive and wanted and as you say my friend the Collins axe company made some fantastic axes and the steel they used and the care they took in hardening and finishing
There products

I gotta get me a Collins camp axe now

I see we are on a Hudson Bay kick lately..... my contribution is my Wetterlings HB - who doesn't like thick cheeks ?!! lol
she chews rounds into small kindling with a quickness
That’s such a nice looking ax. One of these days I’ll buy a GB or Hults ax, almost pulled the trigger on one until I spotted my Collins.

And I’m with you, the HB pattern is one of my favorites. Its compact design and looks get it done for me. What a classic
