If it’s not loose I wouldn’t worry about it. It appears it was tight against the shoulder without much taper holding the head in place. I would sand it down a little to make it look a little better and seal it up.

Right.freaking.on.

I’ll see how that looks after some cleaning up.

Thanks again

Interesting and weird design at the same time.

Personally I am at odds about the head seating, looks kinda weak with that "open" style.
I do like the two bolts securing the head though.
I’ve never seen anything like it and it kinda blew my mind too. Not sure how I feel about it...lol

I'll rather swing a proven closed eye ax head.

Gotta give this one a try, it's lighter and has a shorter handle than my main splitter pictured above.

Both heads side by side.

I'm trying to source a heavier head in this style, might have to make a purchase online unseen as local options are of poor quality.

What’s the weight on your proven splitter? Them cheeks look really thick and I can see why it would split so well. 5 1/2 lbs???

Just checked, with the 40" long handle and steel wedge it's about 2.25kg.
My best guess would be that the head alone weighs in at about 1.8kg after over 20 years of usage and sharpening - I assume it once was a 2.0kg head.

I'll have to remember to weigh this head next time I replace the handle.
