I am quite new with timing wheel, not much I can add, I reset the wheel (findings correct TDC) by knocking down soldiers the same way as we do to figure out squish. When they are flat there is still a tad resistance left, like 2-3 degree on the wheel. For me those soldiers has worked out better then piston stop when I set up the wheel.

I always use a stack of old piston rings when it comes to figure out where TR and EX timings is, piston BDC and move against rotation.

The last thing I can add is this thread:
http://opeforum.com/threads/linear-measurement-for-port-durations.838/
I mostly use David's way to figure out the timings instead of the wheel, today I used both ways on one 242, how close was they? Inside 1/2° ;)

I just use the intake port to find tdc. Set the wheel pointer to about 75° btdc and roll it through tdc to where the piston skirt closes the intake again. Adjust a couple degrees and recheck. About 30 seconds

Yup
I go off the exhaust.
Set to about 95, roll the opposite way, findthe average and make sure open and close are set to the same number.
No more than 30 seconds
