That's a pretty good idea...it would require a little more preparation than "I'm gonna look around the bench here to find something that works" which I'm terrible at.

The washer is not a bad idea, but it usually will have to be something a little more substantial than that. The washer would likely start deforming into the inner race.

The socket would work too but for this setup you would need a rather short socket (unless you use a longer M8) and something for the head of the screw to pull against.

Maybe a stack of washers?

Maybe some cheap, HF sockets ground off short?

At the price of your tool, a guy could afford those, along with a few, longer M8s!
