Some of you have missed the part where I thought I was conversing back and forth with the seller via email. How was I to know it wasn’t real, I’ve bought and sold on here and other sites for years, not once has anyone offer up their phone number or asked for mine.

Never once have I asked for anyones sympathy Dall!
On some forums I'm on, if you don’t jump quickly, someone else will. I never blame the victim.

In the end @woodfarmer was robbed of his money no matter how you look at it. Its no different than if someone stole property from you, doors can be locked and windows barred but thieves found a way.
This sucks and I sympathize with him. Frankly we all jump at good deals online and the millisecond you wait it's a deal gone, I mean it's not called CAD for a reason.
I can definitely see why he's pissed , I would be too. Who likes being scammed and stolen from?
This whole transaction has changed my perspective on purchasing .
so how is it ok to blame ope for him sending money to the scammer????? Because that’s exactly what he did
He didn’t take the responsibility for himself

Yes. And on every forum I've participated on the standard has been first "I'll take it!" gets it. That's all he had to do. Just a post.

Then you start a conversation with the seller, and with most scammers you'd quickly know something was wrong. The 3rd post in this thread sent BIG RED ALARM BELLS to anyone who looked at it. The scam was busted as soon as it started. It's not rocket science.

You don't just fire off money to someone. Learn from the mistake and move on.

I think the only person to blame is the hacker. Its not apparent to me that woodfarmer is guilty of any behavior that should result in him being stolen from.

I don't see this as woodfarmer putting the blame on the site and looking for sympathy at all. He was just plainly stating the facts, that he assumed that a long time member was legit and jumped on it a bit too quickly. I applaud him for coming out with it and providing a valuable lesson in caution.

When people here jump all over someone over nitpicky details or whatever in these situations, it makes the next person scammed shy away from going public, as we've already seen many times in the past.
Someone comes forward having been scammed and then others chime in that they were also taken by the same as*hole, then some wonder and point fingers as to why they didn't come forward sooner.
Well duh..., when history shows they'll get ridiculed for it...

Well luckily PayPal reversed the charges and my bank reversed the nsf charge. I do hope that OPE can do a better job of protecting its members and find out exactly how this happened.

The last sentence blames OPE IMO. What is the site supposed to do? Maybe i’m looking at it wrong idk.

I wonder fast someone would jump if there was an ad for 50lbs of Maxwell House and a carton of Marlboro with free shipping to Wes Viginny.
I wouldn’t know
Because I unlike others know that there’s nothing free in this world

that’s how I saw it too
And when the newer guys start saying ope needs to take care of things
They need reminded of the *B-S.... that has went on showing the scams done by a certain porter from Missouri
I took some *B-S.... about that but I didn’t back down nor will I ever back down
But to blame the site is complete horseshit and I’ll keep saying that and for those who don’t like it can go to arborist site and buy and sell there

I do think this site has done better at warning and coaching potential buyers right in the wanted ads. I believe the 2 step verification system is also available now too.
I just hate to see someone robbed and I don't consider it OPEs fault.

There was nothing cavalier about the purchase. I was expecting it to be from a well know member. The price was good and that’s probably why I jumped on it before anyone else did. The deal was done before agent smith or anyone else posted about the add.
Can you imagine if you had to wait for a phone number, contact the member to verify a sale. Etc etc
As a seller I would sell to the first member that ponies up the money, not make 10 different phone calls.
And yes I will be very gunshy about ever buying anything again when I can’t touch it!

I think everyone here will abide by the first, "I'll take it", while you contact the seller and have a conversation with them. Seller can also post a "back available", if the deal falls through. So no sense in getting the Russians involved.

Buyer beware!

To Dall and everyone else that is sooo much smarter than me. I did not come out and blame OPE. Obviously if the site wasn’t hacked then I wouldn’t be where I am. So yes I’m a little upset but by no means do I put the blame on the site.

I’m also 100% sure most members are so smart they’ve never been scammed.
It sucks that you got scammed, wisdom comes from experience, so guess where everyone else got their wisdom. My wife got a screaming deal on those $90 flea collars, she stocked right up. It was too good to be true. Scammed. It has happened to many of us.

How did you end up getting rid of your fleas?

Paid full price at the vet for the collars. Didn't give the wife any grief as she is frugal and was trying to save money. Now she runs all purchases on great deals by me, before she pulls the trigger.

Collar bothers my neck though.....
