I also opened up the piston windows to encourage flow into the transfers

I like to think of all mods done with respect to how they will change the character of the motor which is really just an air pump

Air flow in sorted.
piston windows sorted
transfers smoothed
exhaust port raised a bit and widened
muffler opened to hell and back :)

I have a 066 I'm putting a 288 piston in. I noticed the wrist pin bearing does not fit. Do I just need a 288 wrist pin bearing? Also putting a wrap handle on it but the brake handle hits it. Which handle works with a wrap? Once I get all my parts lined up I'll probably be asking more question on porting this thing.
Make sure you clearance the cases so the cylinder doesn't get held up,it takes more than you think.
Some saws you need to clearance the crank case for the piston at bdc some you dont, most but not all you need to thin the skirt on 4 corners to clear the crank throws.

Brake handle depends on what wrap.
If it's straight across you need handle 9104

Excellent post Brews. I think you are spot on. If there is one thing I've learned over the years, there ain't no magic formula that works for every saw, in all wood. Keep doing what works for your situation, and keep me in the loop. I build a lot of saw for guys in OZ.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about diesel power lately

Lower RPM with big torque.
Big torque with long life.

Sounds perfect for an Aussie work saw to me!

So, what will make a saw run with more torque at lower RPM?

A diesel engine uses high compression to heat air and then injects the diesel, which is combusted by the hot air.
This is really efficient compared to a petrol 2 stroke as less is wasted out the exhaust, so more torque is made at lower RPM
Hence why fuel injection is more efficient than a carb on a petrol engine.

So, I am wondering what a lower exhaust with higher compression will do?

The worst bit is that to experiment, I will need to push a cylinder past its best, and if you think its hard to get nice cylinders in the USA..... its impossible here

Wrist pin is now 13mm compared to 066 12mm

You need a 288/394/395/084/088 13mm bearing

Get an OEM one!
Stihl or hunky, dont matter, just use OEM.

The after market ones are not so great

I have often wondered why porting and chainsaw performance has never taken off like it has in the USA.

I am thinking that in general, porting is considered a way or increasing max saw RPM which gives higher HP figures and chain speed?

That dont work here unfortunately.

Thanks Jason. Once I get wrist pin bearing I'll see how everything lines up. I'll be in search of a handle if anyone has one laying around I'll take it. Will check what wrap I have later today.

I think you are on it with no help needed from me. What I've seen it that you gotta build a engine that makes peak power at the rpm the work is being done. So, a lower exhaust might be exactly what you need for your wood. I say might because many times engine design dictate rpm more than port height.

I have the straight handle if you need it.

I am going to play with the 064 jug you sent me tomorrow.
Plan to sand some from the squish and some from the base to lower exhaust and increase compression

At this stage I plan to up compression, keep exhaust up high in the hundreds and keep intake in the low 70's to

Ah crap its early AM.... I need sleep :)

The highest tuning 064 i have ever done has the lowest exhaust and the highest intake I've ever tried. Confusing ain't it

A tab, but there may be differences in exhaust and intake restriction that will change the way the motor runs

You can shave the edge of the piston at the edge of the ports to try different numbers then when you figure out what you want port the cylinder and install a new piston.
