I was thinking they should be around .012"
If my number is wrong please correct me lol. Also what is the best way to shorten them? I have never had to shorten them befor.

Ok so inwas thinking too big a gap then.
Just checked and a .004" feeler guage will fit. So should be good then?

Seems like i remember .004/inch of bore? I have a little set of needle files, i use the flat one out of that set to file the ends.
This is what go with.

I’d want at least .006” but would feel better with .008”

Be sure to check ring gap in several different positions within the cylinder where the ring rides.
Use the piston to slide the ring up in the cylinder and to square the ring in the bore.
Don’t push the ring up tight to the squish band or it will be a B to get back out

If you ever need to file the ring ends just clamp a flat file in your vice and drag the ring down the file keeping the ends square. Recheck the gap every stroke as there is no going back...

In the old days they actually made a hand cranked tool like a cross between a table saw and a disk grinder to do that, most shops that did a lot of overhauls had one, many schools did too.

Does the piston have ring locating pins, if so you will have to take that
into consideration. I'm doing a Mac Super 797 with locating pins and
the ring end gap i set at .060 to .062
