Starting on the outside working towards the center of the spring, why not just wind the spring in the housing?
It'll save ya a few steps Carl.
And the likelihood of getting stung in the face is greatly reduced

I find that method very akward, specially on deep recoil housings.

Borrow your kids compass he has from grade school. Draw a circle 1/6" smaller in diameter than the 'nest' the recoil spring sits in. Drive in six roofing nails with the shanks tangent to the circle equally spaced. Wind in your spring inside the 'fence'. Grip the spring with the vice grips or chain nose pliers. Remove two or three nails and slide out the spring. Carefully!!! set the spring inside the housing and release the grip.

I usually wind the spring upside down and transfer it to smaller chain nose pliers. Carefully!! As there is darn little extra room for the vice grips.

It is a good idea to wear eye protection. Been stung in the face.
I didn't know they let kids have those anymore. I thought that it was a felony these days...

I like your method. Its simple and universal for all spring setups. What if you cut a 1/4 inch slot in any position of clock in your setup so that you have enough room to feed a cable tie over and around? Maybe even 2 slots. Then transfer over to the housing and cut the cable ties off.

I bet you are right.

I stuck a kid with a pencil in the 2nd(?) grade. Didn't think to use my compass.[emoji848]

Iffin' I was going to store it or mail it somewhere.

I thought about a center hole and a pin on the workbench to make it easier to spin around instead of on my lap.

Or just wind them in the housing and not have to worry about all the extra work lol

Hardest part for me, is getting it out of that shrink wrap crap. Did a 372 last night, pulled retainer band off, just worked it into the case, around and around.

So what feeling do you get when you remove the rope spool and the rewind spring blows up in your face? I had it happen to me again today on a MS291. Its a feeling that I am not sure I can express in words. You just need to walk away and have a cold one all by yourself.

First thing to do, is throw it across the room to get that out of the way ;). Had a little 015 that I was letting my son use..somehow, the spring came loose inside the housing..as soon as I opened it up, it took off like a rocket. After about 35 minutes of trying to get it put back in place, I had to put it down and walk away....tackled it the next day. Still didn't go together easy. Lol

I hate 015L springs. Actually not much I like about 015's in general. I have a cpl laying around.
I had a right hand start Mac 10-10 yrs ago. Don't remember having any spring problems. I never really knew why they made those right hand pull starts.

For unknown reasons McCulloch couldn't seem to agree which side put the starter on nor what carbs to use.Why in the world they ever used the bull frog and Walbro MAC I'll never know .Talk about two POS to use on a saw and when they already had the HL Tillotson. They must have had rocks in their heads .
