Oh contraire, yes you can. Just clip it to the plug or get another plug wire to plug onto the plug, other end stripped for tester to clip on to and plug coil wire to tester.

I doubt it will work on a points system though, never tried it on one of those, auto or ope.

Two that are most handy for me are the neon tube one that can be used while the saw runs and the gap jumper one, various styles, but idea is the same. Can find most problems with these two.

I use a replace bulb parts one for running saws to check coils etc that go out once warm. Works like a charm

But for everything else checking when not running I use a spark analyzer

It's found weak and bad plugs, bad connections etc.

Some pics pulled from a very old thread.

I like the adjustable air gap type testers. 1cm = 30Kv.
It allows you to adjust the air gap to check the older magneto coils that have a lower output.
(The setup in the video that I posted earlier in the thread is firing the coil at the equivalent of 12,000 RPM with a 8.4 Kv air gap.)

Ended up with this from O’Reillys.

One must really rip on the pull cord for the light to go on.

They also have the other types hanging in blister packs.

Piggybacking on carls thread here
Is there one single spark tester that works equally well for both points and electronic ignitions?

The Lisle 50850 that Warped5 posted earlier in the the thread would be the one that I would select. The points ignition spark gap for most of my saws is 3/16" or .188".

Been using spark testers for a million years or so and I have never had one malfunction or fail to show spark when there was spark or vise versa.

My favorite has been HF. They tend to just fit better all around. Ive used two different ones from NAPA, a Lisle, the Stihl, and that OReillys one which looks a lot like the HF.

Just pick one and run it. It will work.

The above didn’t work on the 056 while running.

Maybe I should try at night.[emoji848]

On to the next from OReilleys.

I have a hf one and one from the mac truck. The mac one is way brighter it seems to show a different brightness based on coil output. I put it on my HO coil on a ski and it was super bright compaired to a ope coil. The hf one seemed kinda dim all the time no matter what i had it on. Your results may vary but im happy with my 20$ mac tools one.
