I agree it was fine and he should have been a man and tagged it. He loaded his bigger buck and left that one laying. When I got home I was faced with a moral dilemma. He was long gone and the deer needed tagged. No matter what decision I made it would be wrong. Had I called the Game Warden I would have zero evidence Dale shot it. He could easily claim one of my sons shot it and then where am I at? There was no way in hell it was going to go to waste. It needed tagged so even though it was immoral and illegal I placed my wife's tag on it. He was then banned from here.

Random thought: Be a man and take responsibility.
Sometimes with ethical/moral decisions, there is no "best", so we have to settle for "least bad."

FWIW, I agree with your choice.

Reading that boils my blood. There is no excuse for a bad shot. Leaving animals in the woods is also disgraceful. It is common here for guys to fire like 3 rounds a year. Shoot one at a pie plate and then go hit the woods. I dont even get it, I hand load and shoot 3k plus centerfire rounds per year and compete in several long range shooting disciplines (PRS, FTR). I still feel unprepared every fall.

I think its like the dunning krugar effect. The better and more experianced you are at marksmanship the more you realize how many variables are at play and what your true skill level is. Like anything in life a lot of folks have a pretty inflated opinion of themselves. Go burn a barrel out every season for years in highly demanding competion, and then do the boasting 😂. A lot of folks fold when push comes to shove.

I would have tagged that deer too.
