I dunno if I've told the story here, but I used to have a 66 and a 65 Mustang. The 65 now belongs to a friend. The 66 I had for many years. This was back when they were considered junkers, not classics. It cost me like 1600 bucks in 1985 or so.
The motor was a very tired 289, and the suspension was super tired. I went to a lot of junkyards and found stuff to bolt on to it. I was in auto shop so had access to welders and such. I beefed up the suspension(maybe a bit much cause that thing rode hard) - the front springs were a set chopped short from a 69 stang. Air shocks all around from Monroe. I was cruising the car swap meets tryin to find parts, debating installing a 4bbl carb(it had a 2 bbl!) when I came across a torino that was put to sleep because the suspension was crap and it was all beat to hell. The guy that owned it pulled the 9 inch and C6 out of it to rebuild to shove it all in to a starsky and hutch looking thing. I found out the torino had a high compression(ish) 4bbl 351CI Windsor in it. I bought it for nearly nothing. It was in great condition. I guess Starsky and Hutch was more popular than I thought. Now stock, that engine only really made about 300hp, but it had 390 ft lbs of torque. Nearly 100 more than my stock 289. I added a mildly used cam from a bud that was maybe a little more aggro than was streetable(thus the used part - he got tired of it fast). The stock valve train handled it OK, so it wasn't a crazy cam. But it did rumble like a Harley at idle. I had a manual tranny, so wasn't too worried about the cam so long as it idled below 1k rpm. Long story short, I wedged it into the 66 with some creative rubber hammer work on the shock towers and headers and a low profile intake. A guy I knew in the classic cars circles had a wide ratio 4 speed top loader he couldn't sell. Everyone wanted a close ratio. I just wanted the top loader and 4 speeds over my little 3 speed. I paid $300 for it rebuilt back in 86. A ford factory mustang drive line I got in a junk yard fit right up to the whole affair with no mods if I recall. Mebbe a different yoke. I forget.
I had slightly larger than stock wheels on it, and the paint wasn't great. Interior was tired and smelled of gasoline and sweat and cigarettes. But the 289 badge was right there on the fenders. So the thing was a complete sleeper aside from the noise, and it attracted a lot of other 289 stangs and fairlanes and comets to it's flame to burn. A lot of 66 stangs had headers and loud exhaust. None of them had a 5.8L V8 mildly warmed over, and none of them beat me, tho. I'm sure it's different nowadays. Some stangs have LS1's in them now.
Still, I surprised a LOT of cars with it back when, though. And the whole affair cost me less than $2.5K including the car.

Never had it to the track, but have a G-Tec on it. My best 0-60 is 4.1 sec, and quarter mile is 12.48 (with real street tires with 300 tread wear ratings). I'm sure drag radials would do much better, but then my drivetrain may complain!

Traction is a real issue in 1st and 2nd, you have to drive it real careful to get those times. I'm sure drag radials would easily put it into the 11s.

Even though I don't really feel the slip in 3rd, if you forget to turn off traction control it will kill the engine, so there is some slip.

Shift points are 45, 70, 110 and 4th will get you up to about 150. Fifth is just for over drive.

You have to shift fast as the computer kills the engine at 6,250. With my Eagle Crank, Rods and Pistons the engine will take a lot more, but it would "violate" the 50 State emissions legal tune, so I leave it where it is.

You got strut bars on it? I've found after installing front, rear and bottom strut bars the performance improved turning, handling, and stiffened it up all around. FSWerks ones are great, made in the USA and $300 gets the whole set!

Bring on the pics.
When I'm down your way next summer I may grab up a new ride, we'll se what transpires between now and then.

Deal! Pics below. I got a '10 mk2 Focus with the 4F27E transmission, Dtec 2.0. 4x108 rim/wheel pattern P195-60R15/16/17.
Duratec 2.0 is the most popular 4 Cylinder engine and found in Mazda's rebranded as SkyActiv 2.0, other sistered 2.0's in Audi A4's, certain Dodge's and other sedans

Phenomenal ride and once modded, pretty sporty. You can get one under $2k easily, trim levels range from S-SE-SES-SEL. I have an S but have added SES features. And here's 3 reasons you want an Mk2 over the others:

Mk1's: too old to source parts for, Duratec is better then Zetec

Mk3's: got the chittay DCT trans,
you'll need a manual, buyers overprice them at resale.

Mk2's: Perfect! And you can fit a lot in these cars.

From a little over 350 miles away earlier this morning, launching from Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral...Boeing’s first CST-100 Starliner astronaut/cargo capsule launch atop an Atlas V rocket, heading to the ISS. Pics taken right off the flightline here in mid-Ga at Robins AFB. If you zoom you can see the glowing exhaust from the Atlas 5 rocket ahead of the exhaust/contrail in a couple of pics. Pics may post out of order but you get the gist...

Right now I have Blizzacks on the 06, drive it all winter, but I know better than to push it too hard. They are high performance Blizzacks, and they do grip surprisingly well. The Co says in temps under 40, they grip better than summer tires even on dry pavement. I have had them for several years, and I believe it is true.

My summer tires are Nitto on wider wheels. 05 s on the front and 555 s on the back. The 05 series have stiffer side walls and are better for cornering. I believe the 555 s are better for straight line. Also, my size is a bit staggered, 285s would rub on the front, so I put 275s on the front. The winter tires are 255 s.

What brand tires do you run?

I bought it for nearly nothing. It was in great condition.

That must have been nice, that body style is even lighter, and those cubes with a cam … hard to beat on the street. Glad you beefed the suspension, I had a 65 but the 67/68 always felt more solid to me.

Ford sold over 1 million Mustangs in the first 2 years, and I remember when used car lots could not get rid of them all … I even drooled over a 65 289 Hi Per I could not afford.

I purchased my 427 Ford Short Block for $300! Was a 66 Holman + Moody seasoned block with a steel crank cut 10+20. Cross Bolted mains and side oiler (could not run a hydraulic cam). The engine had been in a Ford Coupe, and when Chevy came out with the 454, they guy had to build a 454 Ford Motor for it (427 block, bored, and 428 crank). (427 crank gave a stock bore 427 447 cubes.)

I then purchased the pristine 70 Boss 302 body for $800, the bearings has spun for the second time and the guy wanted to get rid of it. I sold the Boss heads to someone who was restoring one for $300! I was still living at home, so every pay check more parts! Carb, intake, double roller timing chain, headers, traction bars, Hurst Shifter, Mallory photo cell ignition, etc.

No, but I have Griggs Racing Torque Arm, lower adjustable control arms, and the pumpkin cover, in addition to a Steeda Adjustable panhard bar and Steeda Suspension.

Ride is a little stiff, but she easily out cornered my wife's 03 Vette.

Cool.
I remember watching the space shuttle take off on TV, then going outside and looking to the north and seeing it pop above the horizon, then a short time later you could see the boosters kick off. This was a while ago(89-91), when I lived in south FL.

I have them all the way around, don’t like the fronts, the sidewalls are too soft, I aired the front to 45psi and that helped a lot. Not sure it I will try the r888r’s next they are supposed to be stiffer and have better grip

What not an echo? Just joking, nice saw!
It's for the build off, but I always have been a Husqy fan. Echo is just a cheaper option with better torque and oil output. I prefer the design and weight of a 390xp, but will keep this after the build off if it is a strong runner as a big bore.
