Ya the white you see in the pic is droppings and smell fish, there were also vultures there so something was dead too! Not a lot off visitors to the island!!I was wondering if it smells like chit there?

I've seen it happen here...heard it takes a direct hit to do that thoughI was wondering if that happened. But I've never seen the bark blown off.

If you look at the center towards the base/root flare you can see a small section that was blown out of it, also a crack a couple inches to the right of that, I'd guess was also caused by the lightning strike.
Bet the folks in the neighborhood had their windows rattled, I like that.

This is a bigass walnut tree in my buddy's uard down the street. Its still kicking strong 3 uears after this happened amd when it did it fried some electronics in the house.
