Got a ‘new’ boat today. It came with a trailer, a 2 hp Johnson 2 stroke, and an electric trolling motor... all for $300. I’m pretty happy with the deal.

2 stroke? Gotta port it! 2HP? might as well swap it for a $35 AM MS250 short block.

They're about 30% 60cc Extra 300 and Edge 540. One was mine and the other my friend's who is shown flying mine. We both liked that one a lot, best flying plane ever. I traded him a 40% airframe for it.

Here's a vid of smoke tests after I just installed the pump, you can get a glimps at the power of the tail to whip it around. Click for >>Video

It was an oily mess afterward

It was the wrong plug, went to heat range cooler than stock for extra safetyIt is a 13.5 to 1+ a three mill stroker. It also had an aftermarket CDi which was causing some issues as well

Had the machinist turn down the stock shift drum to accept a bearing! The stock setup has the end of the drum riding in the case, metal to metal,no bearing at all! This make shifting a lot smother!

Related to the shift drum mod.
I've not torn into a transmission for nearly 30 years, so please understand my lack of knowing any current assembly tricks.

What does the selector fork have where it engages the drum grove? Any sort of bearing there?
We never did anything much beyond some corner touchup of the slots.
Doing much more mucking about in the drum groves just seemed like a good way to get sloppy shifts and engagement problems.

How about the shafts the forks slide on?
Back in the 70's We buffed/polished them a little bit.

Modern surface finishes/tooling and computer machining may have eliminated the need any of our old ideas though.

Honestly the basics hasn’t changed, all of those mods are still good mods, I polish the fork shafts and do a light buff to the drum, nothing crazy! This motor design dates back to the 70’s. There are no bearings on the forks, for this model, the rz350 has bearings on the shift forks and is a good upgrade(direct swap with shift drum) but it is costly and difficult to get. Honestly the best shifting upgrade I do is run atf and change the oil every ride, shifts like a dream! The bearing on the drum really helps along with modifying the the sift star. I haven’t done the roller detent upgrade for the drum that indexes each gear, maybe the next one!
I have one transmission in my drag bike that has been modified for full throttle clutchless upshifts...all is the gears are back cut and the drum is modified to alow two gears to be engaged at one time, on each upshift the faster gear kicks out the lower gear, they call it a override, because each gear overrides the last. It is amazing! Butter smooth sifts and way faster! I would say at least 3-4 bike leangths in just the transmission for a 100 yard race

In the 2 stroke stuff, most of my friends probably changed gear oil a couple times a year.
I probably did 4~5 times. Just sort of looked for a bit a darkening vs the color in the new bottle.

...of course there was that issue of the shift lever shaft in the Yamahas (oh yeah I liked the reed motor).
If you ever saw one dripping at that corner underneath the kick starter... Was probably from being dropped on the left side.
The shifter shaft was located by simple "E" clips and when it took a hard wack on the shift lever, it would drive the shaft into the right side and push out that bottom rear corner, leaving a tiny crack in the cover.
Weld 'em up and dress flat the gasket surface.
Don't forget to look for stray or bent clips in both sides of the cases though!

Now I definitely could tell a different shift feel with fresh oil in the 4 strokes ( in oil common to trans & engine).
3am here. I need to jump off and sleep a little.
