When an AFM lifter goes, yes.
The General has a bunch of bulletins on it.
Next time you have an intake off one of these, check the bolts holding the VLOM on. I bet 75% of the trucks I have the intake off for whatever reason, most of the bolts are finger tight.

Yikes! I done them all wrong! Regardless, replaceing the VLOM would be way easier than replaceing the gaskets on it. That is a PITA.

You havent done them wrong. I always give them the option, just stating that GM recommends it. I have had a few decline it.
Under warranty we can only replace the lifters on the affected cylinder.
That being said, I have replaced say the #4 lifters 1 week, and the #6 lifters 2 weeks later...

At our shop we replace the entire set. Kind of a cover your ass thing. If we put in one cylinder and then next week another one went out we would be made to eat it.

The Dodge Hemi 5.7 is bad for the rollers in the lifters failing and eating the cam lobe off. Complaint is idles smooth but runs rough on accel. Pull the affected bank valve cover off and watch the rockers while you crank it. You'll notice on rocker only moves a quarter of the rest. For some reason it seems to be cylinder 3 intake valve on the 6 or so ive diagnosed. Never repaired one. They always go strait to a dealer to trade it in.

I like those trucks! Swb 2wd?

Long box. 2wd.
What do you feel is the cause is? How many miles?

This one had 150k on it. The afm lifters are prone to failure. Oil, oil supply, or just too much chit happening inside a tiny little area..

@Dub11 they only want you replacing whats broken to keep warranty costs down.
Yet, there is an assistance calculator thing they have when the vehicle is out of warranty and a customer calls GM and complains. Not sure what its based off, but they will cover a portion of the bill.
Thing that sucks for me is I then get paid warranty time...

@Steve if you start seeing Chevy Cruze's with the 1.4 that have what you would swear is a lifter tick, pull the cam cover.
Upper chain guide bolts must be made by Husqvarna.

Thanks!

Thats a new one for me. Ive put timing cover gaskets, chains, phasers, pcv hoses, valve covers, intake manifolds, water outlets and a bunch of other stuff on that engine.

Good money maker for sure!

This is a new phenomenon with this engine. I think I have done 7,8 or so in last 6 months.

Ed you must have been reading my mind as I have heard this tick lately and have been wondering what it is. It doesn’t seem like it gets any louder or faster while driving but I sure notice it while sitting at idle. Guess I’ll add this to the list of things to get fixed

Is it a tick or s chirp?
Chirp noise is usually sucking air from crank seal.

It sounds like a tick for sure. We hardly drive the car in the winter but my wife drives it all summer so when winter comes and I get to drive it is when I find all that is wrong as she has the radio up enough you can hear the engine. Half the time she can’t hear it while I’m hearing it and wondering what it is. At has just over 100k and we did the intake this summer and my mechanic buddy said the engine look exceptionally clean and maintained

Thats likely your problem then. First one drove me nuts, at the bolts were loose, but not backed out like the one in my pic..
I found it by accident when I grabbed the chain to see if it was tight and saw the guide move.

Thanks, was curious! I just got an older truck with 5.3, wasn’t sure if I needed to do any extra maintenance!
