Yep, I just clean them with HOT water & dry on the stove top burner then re-oil.When I acquired mine, I burned them off in the wood stove. I season them with Crisco shortening every time I clean them. Works good. Never any rancid smell.
I use electrolysis for cleaning cast iron rusty chains or any other iron.Gonna re-season a ROUGH shape Lodge skillet today that was giving to me.

Dens (Meat Locker Down my street) 5# for 5$ for Lard he renders.Yep, I just clean them with HOT water & dry on the stove top burner then re-oil.
Lard is CRAZY expensive nowadays!
$11 + Tax for a smallish Crisco now!
I bought some no name "Pure Lard" block @ Walmart for $2 & some change.
I've never bought Lard in my life. Lol
I've read about it.
I've just always done it on a open fire.
Always used Vegetable oil, but knowing how it can go rancid & hardly using these pans, I went with Lard this time.
Both of these were totally unusable.
Open fire does a decent job (much hotter than a oven can go).

The price of Crisco or lard isn't that bad considering how long it lasts. A can of Crisco lasts a year. It gets used for making pie crusts, greasing pans and seasoning the cast irons every time we clean them.Yep, I just clean them with HOT water & dry on the stove top burner then re-oil.

Not if you render your own. We can buy the fat pretty cheap at the supermarket and just render it ouselves. Have about 30 pints in the basement with more fat in the freezer to make about the same. We use lard for just about everything when cooking and wiping down the cast iron when we finish with it. Had a friend that butchered their Kuni Kuni hogs and were going to toss out the fat, but we asked if we could have it and they gladly gave it to us. Kuni Kuni make really good lard!Lard is CRAZY expensive nowadays!
Plus, you get the cracklins at the end. Works almost like little bacon bits. Not if you render your own. We can buy the fat pretty cheap at the supermarket and just render it ouselves. How many times is that for that engine? While I'm thinking about it, have you ever played with an Acura sport-shift transmission?Got the tree ready for the Christmas season.
