Dad dropped off one of his saws(husky 345) with a note saying "won't idle, when I set it down it quits". So I fired it up and Idle is all over the place 2600-3200, when I turn the saw around/upside down it'll quit. It's all stock, I'm sure it's most likely the clamp or crank seal but I'd sure like to be able to test before I tear it down.

Question is, I want to be able to vac and pressure test, but I can't justify the clams for a mityvac.

Anyone make their own testers? I can fab up stuff fairly well. Or do any of you guys have a tester that you don't need that you'd part with reasonably priced? I'm sure there's a thread somewhere on making your own but I haven't had much luck finding one.

I use a manual blood pressure setup to pressure test.
I did the exact same, I stole the pump and Guage off of a cuff, then used the rubber stethoscope hose with the molded y to hold them. Mine eventually started leaking at the bulb so I ponied up and got a mity vac. The blood cuff setup is only for pressure tho, you need a mity vac for that, or a brake bleed kit pump. It's basically a vac pump and can be had for $20.

To the op, that is only for vacuum. It will work good and that's a good price. I've sometimes wondereD if a modified bike pump would work.

I have a regulator that i would part with for positive. You need a compressor or gas cylinder to use it though

Thinking I could get a cheap bp monitor for pressure, between that and the vac kit I think I'd be good. Then just have to figure out block off of the intake/exhaust, correct?

You will need to buy or make the plug adapter to run the tests. Ford150 sells some echo and husky ones. The block off plates are pretty cheap too but you can make your own with inner tube an using the carb and muffler

Great thread. I would like to have a setup for pressure and vac testing as well. Lots of great shared ideas and information. The folks here are top notch when it comes to helping each other out and it's awesome.

Might vac 8500 is a good buy. You can pull vacuum and pressure test. It's a must have for saw work.

Yup, I have one as well.

I got this Mity Vac compression tester for $10 at the same pawn shop. It has more hoses and adapters than my Snap-On (another pawn shop find).

If you guys think that'll work I'll buy it for $22. Have to fab up something for the plug hole tho, right? Any air fittings that have the same threads as spark plugs? Thinking out loud.
Keep the ideas coming, great so far!

I use that for vac testing. Not rough duty so don't drop it but it works great.

Its not like you can buy a mitycac and start testing saws. You also need block off plates (rubber tyre inner) & a modded spark plug with hose barb fitted or proper pricey OEM plugs with fittings to get the air in/out. While the 8500 mityvac is a great tool, ya need more stuff to do testing. A compressor turned down lo with the other things mentioned could be a cheap solution for pressure tests.
