Play in mower tranny, help?

The driving experience of my old Murray riding mower has never been very smooth, it always feels like it jerks sometimes while driving, like a little faster, then a little slower repetitively. Also doesn’t always go into 6th gear which is the highest gear and then sometime it decides to and absolutely takes off. It’s also in general a but hard/hesitant to shift into any gear sometimes. While removing the wheels to grease the axles this mornin’ I noticed there’s an awful lot of play/wiggle in it. From what I’m understanding on the internet I need new bearings, correct? How hard of a job is this? How expensive of a repair? Maybe I’m better off finding a parts machine with a good transmission for really cheap.
