He cant be trying to hide the damage that has been done to the new piston and it sure looks like something has been used as a piston stop to tighten up the clutch ..I assume !
So whats this chaps beaf ?? ....The fact that the piston seems not to have stood up to his "apparent " over exuberance" ? therefore is he maintaining it was "weak" ?

Some folks cannot see the arrows that show the way to turn the clutch to tighten or get off. I had a 1969 Plymouth Fury III that an idiot wrung ALL the lug nuts off the wheels on the passenger side trying "to get them off". Didn't matter you could see the threads, "they all turn the same way" according to that guy. Same with this one.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and impressed with the masses of information!

I cannot speak for chainsaws. But seen exactly the same damage on stihl concrete saws from using a piston stop tool and over cranking the clutch on removal. Could be a plug, but I would say piston stop tool.

Must have given it the beans mind. As I have yet to do that, to even aftermarket pistons!!!!

I'm with everyone else. Looks like it definitely came from a metal piston stop. I use one sometimes and go very easy on it. If the clutch is being stubborn I 8nstall a rope or something else soft to lighten the blows on the rotating assembly.

Dave, I used to sell engine parts. Thanks for the reminder of why I don't miss it.
I used to get at least one Perkins 4.108 water pump back every year. The pulley needs to be pressed onto the replacement waterpump. The shaft needs to be supported when pressing on the pulley. If not, the shaft would move and destroy the seal. I would explain this once or twice a year to some *pretty boy customer who wanted his money back.

I'm just at a loss as to what tool he used? I've never used a piston stop yet on a Stihl, just a quick buzz in the right direction with an impact gun is all it take.

Perhaps he used one in conjunction with a piston stop going the wrong way?

My guess was:
image.jpeg

The guy said it only tan for a few minutes.
I showed it to parts manager and then it made its way around the dealership through parts and service.
I hadnt considered the piston stop because i use a plastic stop, but i can check the indentation on the stop as well
