Pferd files-classic or premium?

Ditching a few old Stihl files. Which Pferd style to replace Stihl?

I wouldn't say they are better, as I've only worn a couple of stihl files, but I really like them. Comparable and cheaper, for sure, with the caveat I don't sharpen much stihl chain.

I have done a bit of stuffing around with both the Pferd files.

Classic has a lower spiral rate and different teeth. Cuts faster, leaves a slightly rougher finish.

Premium is similar to the Vallorbe's in cut feel, speed and quality. Both the Pferd run slightly small (0.1mm) than there stated size.

Overall it makes little to no practical difference. I like the feel of the premium's and the Vallorbe's but the cut speed of the Pferd classic suits people using them in file guides like 2 in 1's

If you have Stihl files, look at the marking. If it says made in Switzerland, they were made by vallorbe. If they are stamped made in Germany, they were made by Pferd

There isn't many companies making chainsaw files these days so it would be a safe guess to say they are made by Pferd as well if they are stamped made in Germany. They use a distinctive text that makes it easy to tell

The packaging is identical to the Pferd files I've owned.

Intensive cuts are good for damage

I like classic pferds

Oregon only good for touching up

Someone said Nicholson was good. I disagree!

All great files, have not had issue with any.

Filing technique and file maintenance will do more for logevity than any particular good brand.

Yesterday my brand new Stihl flat file got bald spots swiping mere 20 rakers on a 40DL Stihl 3/8" Picco full chisel loop.

Their files went down the gutter years ago.
The ones laser etched Made in Swiss are crap, the ones stamped Made in Germany were premium.

Pferd Premium for me. Mostly Oregon chains. Been using a couple of USA Nicholson's for rakers.
