For the same reason that a cylinder is called a barrel by some, think of firearms.

On an aircraft cylinder, there is a section of it called a barrel (made of steel) and the other section is the head (made out of aluminum and containing the valves). They can be separated and serviced individually (by an engine shop, not the typical mechanic)
