I did post this in the 'What's on your bench thread' but I wonder if the people who can answer my questions wont see it there! Anyway....I think I might have got a score on Friday! I caught up with my father's cousin who is now 80 and used to process firewood for a job. I knew he had an 084 and after a few discussions we worked out a deal where I supply him with 4 cord of wood in exchange for the saw:

It runs really well (although very rich) and has great compression but I noticed it wasn't oiling. On inspection I find that it has the older style oil drive:

And it has the springs broken! Someone has also put the later style clutch drum on and ground it to suit the oil pump drive and probably caused the breakage you see above. My question is, can the oil pump drive be upgraded to the later style as per the IPL below and is it a direct changeover?

Thanks @Glock37! Just what I wanted to hear! I am considering getting the cases powdered at some stage but I am of two minds. The saw has a huge amount of history in the family and the scars sort of add to it. If I did want to get them powdered would you be interested? Or would it be more economical to get it done in NZ (if I knew what color to use!)

I have 2 084's with that style oiler gear. One of them started to fail, the saw was still oiling fine, I didn't notice any problems, just had it apart for cleaning and routine maintenance and saw that little bow-tie looking thing cracked up and missing one of the small fingers. Essentially, it looked like it was 5 minutes away from coming completely out of the plastic. What my problem was is the bushing in the plastic gear was seizing up to the crankshaft and caused excessive stress on the 4 fingers on that oil drive gear.
